Fortnite players who think they’re hot shots have been presented an opportunity to pocket some meaningful funds in exchange for clearing this creator’s deathrun map with the best time.
Deathruns are becoming quite popular among Fortnite players, and are incredibly challenging because the entire map is designed to kill you as quickly as possible. The maps - formed in creative mode - actually make creators good money as players have to enter a code that sees five percent of their in-game purchases go towards the independent creator.
Jesper Mikkelson, a Fortnite creator, says he makes a “good living” off designing minigames within the battle royale title. While he isn’t allowed to say how much, it’s safe to assume that it’s a significant sum considering he’s willing to hand players who can clear his map in the shortest time a cool $1K, collectively.
The challenge, coined Jesgran’s Deathrun 2.0, will see the top three contestants earn $700, $200, and $100, respectively. The trailer can be viewed below.
It does look like an impossible feat, but we’re well aware that there are gamers all over the world capable of getting through it. They just need to do it really fast.
If you’re thinking that this map looks like it took a lot of time to build, you’d be right. It took Jesper 400 hours.
“For the first 2-3 weeks I was building for 15+ hours a day,” he said to Polygon. It took him over 20 hours to take his concept from the sketchbook to the game.
The creator also shared his map with 250 playtesters during development, many of them expert deathrun players. After 1,000 hours worth of playtesting, he’s come up with what is a remarkably insane challenge.
“Deathruns became so popular because we love to see people compete and really push boundaries,” he says. “Hopefully this is just the start of creative as a competitive game mode.”
Players have been calling for Epic Games to provide better rewards to creative mode developers like Jesper. There is a support-a-creator program in place to reward such designers, yet the earnings are nothing when compared to what popular streamers make just playing Fortnite.
