The Final Fantasy VII remake is a long-awaited release from Square Enix which will bring one of the greatest Final Fantasy titles to the Playstation 4 with all the content of the original packed into a beautifully updated package. While we’ve received tons of peeks, we’re still more than a month away from the release of this game.
The ten games listed here can give you a great experience while you’re waiting on the release. Given that the game will be released in episodes, you might just want to go ahead and keep this list handy to come back to in case you find yourself needing to eat up more time between releases.
10 Devil May Cry 5
2019’s Devil May Cry 5 has been a well-received expansion to the already beloved franchise. Focusing on three primary protagonists, the game centers on the player’s adventures in saving the world from an evil demon king.
Longtime fans of the franchise who may have been disillusioned by recent installments will find the game to be a refreshing return to form. Given that many of us who have built up an affection for Final Fantasy titles probably at least once leaned in the Playstation direction of console wars, there’s a good chance we’ve been involved with this franchise as well.
9 Legend of Dragoon
If you’ve got an older system laying around and haven’t checked it out yet, you should give Legend of Dragoon a glance. This 1999 hit from Sony Computer Entertainment found mostly positive reception, with over one million copies sold.
While the narrative is on par with some of the other hits which sold in the late 90s, what really makes Legend of Dragoon stand out is the precision combo system in combat. Characters are able to chain attacks together in order to maximize damage output, adding a new layer to familiar turn-based combat mechanics.
8 Grand Theft Auto V
Is there a more compelling way to waste time than to play Grand Theft Auto? If you’ve got one, we’d love to hear it.
Rockstar’s hit franchise always brings a familiar formula with several different ways to play. If you enjoy storylines, there’s one in the game. If you want to rack up crime sprees, this game has plenty of ways to do so. If you’re more of a fetch-quest player, there’s tons of opportunity here. GTA has plenty for everyone.
Of all the GTA games released, Grand Theft Auto V is arguably the best of the series. Having released in 2013, the price tag on this title is significantly lower than many available. If you’re looking for a cheap game to pick up and put down while you wait, look no further.
7 Chrono Cross
1999’s sequel to the ever-popular Chrono Trigger still stands today as one of the most underrated titles ever released by Squaresoft. One of the main features of the game is that it features 45 individual playable characters which have one key element which plays into the game’s innovative combat system.
Many players have shrugged this game off as a bit more complicated than other titles at the time. For starters, all of the 45 characters mentioned cannot be recruited in a single playthrough of the game. At certain points, one must be recruited which will lock out others. Completionists will sigh in relief to know that they can obtain all of the characters on one save file using the game’s New Game+ option.
6 The Outer Worlds
The Outer Worlds has been one of the most refreshing releases in some time. While it isn’t a given that fans of one RPG series will gravitate to another, some fans just might be surprised at everything this game has to offer.
For starters, the companion system in The Outer Worlds has an impressive amount of depth. Dialogue options have legitimate impacts on an already fantastic story, and the game presents legitimate options to players. While some might be turned off by the purely FPS presentation, The Outer Worlds has done a lot to bring decision-making back to the world of RPGs.
5 Final Fantasy Tactics
For turn-based strategy fans out there, this title will be a nice change of pace. Set in the mythical kingdom of Ivalice, Final Fantasy Tactics chronicles the story of Ramza Beoulve during The Lion War. The game balances a class system built around “jobs” which allow in-depth strategy in tactical combat against a variety of opponents.
While Ramza is the only main playable character in the game, the story is very well developed and follows several other events in order to captivate players. For Final Fantasy VII fans, there is actually a cameo by Cloud which makes him a playable character in the title.
4 Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers
While waiting, we could just check out another recent Final Fantasy title. While it might seem obvious to take one of the main installments, why not branch out a bit and check out the hype with the MMO version, Final Fantasy XIV?
Originally released in 2010, the game was relaunched in 2013. 2019’s Shadowbringers expansion has brought new life to the title which has served to further boost the experience for registered users. If you’ve ever thought about checking out one of the Final Fantasy MMO worlds, now might be the best time.
3 Minecraft
The classic throwaway game. Minecraft is a literal world of your own to build and play as you see fit. Whether you enjoy intricate contraptions or simply building the biggest box you can, Minecraft is the single-greatest sandbox on the market. Updates for current consoles and Windows 10 have only served to further the relevance of this game.
Sometimes it’s nice to open up a world you’ve built on before and simply build in a new area. Minecraft isn’t a game that you have to dump hours into. You can pick it up and come back months later. There is truly no limit to the enjoyment you can find with Minecraft.
2 Red Dead Redemption 2
2018’s prequel story enjoyed one of the biggest launches in video game history, setting records and earning several accolades for its performance. Chronicling the story of Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a gaming experience which many have found to be refreshingly encompassing.
This fictional representation of the US takes several factors into account which many games overlook, including realistic physics and weight management mechanics. While most serious gamers have already given the title a shot, now is a good time to branch out and enjoy this open world experience if you haven’t done so already.
1 Final Fantasy VII
Since we’ve already introduced some older titles into the discussion, why not take the time to play through the game which spawned the remake itself? If nothing else, it’ll help you identify elements which are and are not present in the eventual release.
There’s a reason Final Fantasy VII is being remade. There’s a reason it has stayed in the discussion for years. This title is one of the greatest games in the Final Fantasy franchise. Even with older graphics, FFVII has aged extremely well, and revisiting the original title while you wait for the updated version is certainly worth the time.
