Temtem is a recent MMORPG created to mimic the Pokémon world, pleasing every Pokémon fan ever who was crying out for a MMORPG made from the franchise. Players can go around catching small creatures, battling them, and doing everything that anyone who spent their childhood on a Gameboy would absolutely love.
Sadly, it’s only available on PC — but not for long. Although no date has been confirmed, Temtem will eventually come to consoles some time this year and allow everyone to enjoy it. Until then, if you’re an MMORPG fan, there are other games that can keep you occupied on Playstation and Xbox.
10 Skyforge
Skyforge takes place on a secondary world called Aelion, and is unique in that the character players assume is an immortal with incredible powers. And that’s not the only unique thing about it — the game isn’t based on leveling, but is based on more of a “prestige” system that doesn’t lock the players into one specific class. In fact, they can switch between all seventeen of them throughout the game.
The game is a fun playthrough and although there are MMORPGs on console with bigger player bases, it’s definitely worth a shot — it even won a couple of awards.
9 Onigiri
If you’d like to immerse yourself in Japanese mythology and folklore, Onigiri is your game. It takes place in ancient Japan and although there are some western influences, the majority being Japanese make it an MMORPG like no other. Although the game was created in 2016, it stands strong in 2020 and has appeal even today, making a fun playthrough if you’d like to distract yourself from waiting for Temtem to pop up on the Playstation or Xbox store.
8 Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XIV is widely regarded as one of the best console MMORPGs, if not the undisputed champion of them all. The original game was launched in 2010, and it was recreated years later to be made the MMORPG that it is today.
It combines a lot of classic MMORPG elements like character customization and choosing a class with some of the typical Final Fantasy game elements, such as the characters and surrounding world. You could put so many hours into this game that you might still be stuck to it by the time Temtem is even released.
7 Star Trek Online
Star Trek Online is not the best or most innovative MMORPG out there, but Star Trek fans will definitely enjoy this one for the world that’s been created. What makes this game fun is how loyal it is to the Star Trek fanbase, recreating storylines from the movies and TV shows that made people love it in the first place.
In terms of gameplay, it’s not the most well done, but it’s certainly worth an honorable mention for the Trekkies who might get a real kick out of this one.
6 TERA
TERA, otherwise known as The Exiled Realm of Aborea, was created a long time ago (almost ten years!) but still has a huge player base today. It might just be the most classic MMORPG on this list with the combat, battles, character classes, etc., being very typically what someone would expect in a MMORPG. If you’re looking for a game that truly feels like its genre and aren’t looking for something hugely different from anything you might have played before, this will scratch the MMORPG itch.
5 Destiny 2
Destiny 2 isn’t quite an MMORPG, but it is an MMO, and how could we not include it on this list?
It has character customization and a cool world, much like MMORPGs, but it comes in first person shooter combat. If you’re looking for something a little different, no turn based combat or questing that’s typical of the RPG genre, you might want to wander over to this game for a bit.
4 Black Desert Online
Black Desert Online is a sandbox-style fantasy MMORPG, which even has a mobile version. It has some third person shooter style elements as well as everything you would want from an actual RPG. The thing that really stands out about this game as well as the stunning world is its unique combat system, different from most RPGs. Why not try it out and see?
3 The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online didn’t have the best reception when it first launched, and most players still claim it’s nowhere near as good as Bethesda’s other ventures, most notably Skyrim. However, this game still has a lot of players despite the complaints and its success it not to be sneered at!
Bethesda are still releasing expansion packs for it too and keeping the game updated to keep their players interested. If you’re looking for a medieval MMORPG, this is still one of the best available, even if it falls short next to the likes of their single player games.
2 DC Universe Online
DC Universe Online is a solid MMORPG that’s still getting updates years later because people are still dedicated to the game. Comic book fans will adore this, mainly because you can interact with any DC hero or villain throughout it, and the missions tend to be fun and suited for the characters. Wander through the DC universe and come up against Batman, the Joker, Superman, and pretty much any other DC classic you can think of.
1 Neverwinter
There’s actually a game based on Dungeons & Dragons, so fans of the tabletop game should love the fantasy world of Neverwinter. It’s free to play and doesn’t require you to pay for any microtransactions to advance if you’re willing to level grind, which is a real highlight of it. It’s also fun, where you can customize your characters and engage in classic but still fun RPG missions to advance your role in the game.
The player base has quieted a little in recent months, but there’s still a solid group of people. Join one of their guilds when you get into the game and have fun!
