Apex: Legends has been dominating the multiplayer landscape since it was released back in February, and many people have begun to notice some… strange things within its world. Easter eggs are always fun to find. Usually, they end up online in lists like this or dozens of YouTube videos. But there’s nothing quite like seeing them in person. Easter eggs are also a fun way for a developer to interact with their audience, as they are usually self-referential, fun, or meta-textual.
If you want people to talk about your game long after its initial release, insert a few Easter eggs. That’s bound to get the fanbase talking… like it is here. Here are 10 Easter eggs only true fans caught in Apex: Legends.
10 Nessie Plushies
Nessie plush toys have long been a Respawn Entertainment tradition, as they littered the maps of both Titanfall and Titanfall 2 with the adorable green plushies. They did not forego the tradition for Apex: Legends, and various Nessie plush toys can be found littered throughout the map.
The easiest Nessie to find is in the training level, although ten can be found on the map itself. The first can be found to the northwest of the Cascades, and if you shoot that, a second will appear Skull Town. If you shoot THAT, a third will appear, and so on and so on. So get hunting, people! Nessie plushies are out there!
9 Nessie
If you thought it was only boring Nessie dolls, you’re in for a treat! Turns out, Nessie herself makes an appearance in the game, and it is quite the sight to behold. If you somehow manage to find and shoot all ten Nessie plush toys without dying or running out of time (which, trust us, is quite the feat), then Nessie herself will rise from the depths of the water.
Of course, this requires you to time your game correctly, and it will work much better if you split your team up to cover specific areas of the map so you’re not singlehandedly running all over the place. But what a reward it is!
8 Black Dog Toy
Turns out that the training area is absolutely littered with Easter eggs. Not only can you find the easiest Nessie plushie there is to find, but you can also come across a little black dog.
Unfortunately, this dog is hidden way up in the rocks, so some intense climbing, parkour, and platforming is required to reach the specific outcrop. Once you get to the correct location, you will be greeted with a little black dog toy just kind of standing there looking cute. Unfortunately, there is quite a tragic story behind this little black dog toy…
7 Shadie Shrine
The black dog is Shadie, and she is meant to honor a real dog. Shadie was the dog of lead level designer Jason McCord, and she tragically passed away during development of Apex: Legends. A shrine to her can be found in a large building in the market. Included in the shrine is another little toy of Shadie, a blue and black patterned pillow, and two pictures.
In one picture, the real Shadie stands proud as she poses for the picture. The other one features designer Jason McCord and his wife, the owners of the beautiful dog. Now how about you honor Shadie and go see her shrine? She deserves it!
6 Bastion
Apex: Legends is the first game in a while to directly compete with Blizzard’s Overwatch. While Overwatch has long dominated the first person shooter market, Apex: Legends has remained a fierce contender for the crown since being released in February. So it’s only natural that Respawn honored their rivals with a funny little Easter egg!
In one of Pathfinder’s legendary banner poses, he can be seen fleeing from a raven, who remains perched just above his shoulder. Fans of Overwatch may recognize this as an Easter egg, as Pathfinder bears a striking resemblance to Bastion, a square-framed robot with a bird companion. Only, his doesn’t attack him…
5 Lastimosa Armory
Eagle-eyed viewers may notice that some guns are stamped with a brand reading Lastimosa Armory. This is a cute little Easter egg that works on numerous levels. The most obvious is that Lastimosa Armory is an arms manufacturer within the Titanfall universe, which makes sense seeing as how Apex: Legends takes place within said universe.
It could also serve as a reference to Tai Lastimosa, a character found in Titanfall 2. Finally, it also honors Respawn Entertainment’s weapon designer and artist Ryan Lastimosa, for whom Lastimosa Armory was obviously named.
4 Cash Mayo
This Easter egg isn’t really hidden per se, but rather an interesting reference to Respawn history. The first “extra,” or added, character was Octane, an adrenaline junkie who can bounce high with his launch pad and run really, really fast thanks to some unknown drug. Octane is a reference to Titanfall 2 speedrunner Cash Mayo.
Cash Mayo used frag grenades to propel himself through the map, which is mirrored in Octane’s backstory. The link to Cash Mayo’s incredible speedrun was also embedded in Octane’s introductory video, further solidifying the connection. Octane is a Titanfall speedrunner confirmed!
3 Titanfall 2
If you haven’t learned by now, Apex: Legends shares more than a few connections with Titanfall 2. Another reference to Respawn’s past game can be found on the legendary Warp Zone skin for the Mastiff shotgun. If you zoom in close on the gun, you can see the word “Titanfall 2” branded on the gray part in orange text. It’s tiny, but it’s certainly there!
It’s nice to know that Respawn isn’t messing around with their Easter eggs. Instead, they’re just jumping right into the subliminal messaging! Does anyone else have a strong inkling to play Titanfall 2 now? We know we do!
2 Mega Man
The Warp Zone Mastiff skin is just loaded with Easter eggs! Not only can “Titanfall 2” be found on the side, but a retro looking Mega Man can be found in the little built-in screen.
If you look at the gun from the side, you will see a protruding screen. On this screen is a green background with a little retro video game character who looks an awful lot like Mega Man! Also found on the other side of the screen is what looks like an NES cartridge, further signifying the gun’s link to old school gaming! We guess they really want you to dish out money for this thing…
1 Tick
Look, yet another reference to Titanfall 2! When will these guys stop?! This pretty little Easter egg can be found hiding on the legendary Pest Controller skin for the Mastiff. Much like the Warp Zone, the Easter egg can be found on the little protruding screen on the side of the gun. On this one is a red brain-looking creature with what looks like spider legs.
While our first instinct may be to associate this with the Metroid universe, it’s actually a reference to the Ticks from the Titanfall series. Even the color is a match. Turn out, Respawn is really proud of their previous work! And we can’t blame them.
