The Witcher 3 is a phenomenal title, whichever way you slice it. By far the most ambitious instalment in the series, it’s one of the biggest and most impressive games in recent memory. Perhaps few have read the original stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, but we’ve all played The Witcher 3 (or at least heard the high acclaim fans heap upon it).
The surly Geralt of Rivia became a beloved gaming anti-hero as players traversed the vast world known only as the Continent. If you feel like you’ve seen it all, though, there are several similar titles that also promise to suck you in for hundreds of hours on end. Let’s take a look at some!
10 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Well, let’s be honest with ourselves, where else could we have started this rundown? When it comes to open-world adventures of truly dizzying scope and freedom, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the first name that comes to mind.
Yes, this incredible choose-your-own-adventure experience is showing its age a little now (playing without any mods can be super jarring), but really, it needs no introduction or explanation. It’s Skyrim. Yes, you’ve already played it, but if The Witcher 3 gave you that free-roaming world urge, hop into Skyrim for yet another playthrough.
9 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Now, sure, compared to some other open-world behemoths, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild doesn’t do anything especially ground-breaking. In terms of the scope of the series itself, though, it’s an absolutely stunning achievement.
Breath of the Wild took everything we knew about Zelda and dialled it up to eleven. Billion. You thought being able to dash across Hyrule Field in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was amazing? Well, it was, but this is something else entirely. Breath of the Wild’s blend of survival elements, side-quests and challenging optional enemies is sure to endear The Witcher fans to the game, even if they’re new to Zelda.
8 Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition is a very different kind of RPG. It’s a product of BioWare, the minds behind Mass Effect, so you already know what you’re getting into here.
As with The Witcher 3, Inquisition contains a hefty dose of combat, but it tempers all of that blood-leaky action by bringing something very different to the fore: relationships. Not only can you romance… just about anyone who takes your fancy, but dialogue options and often-heavy consequences for certain actions come into play a lot. If that’s something you enjoyed in The Witcher 3, the Dragon Age franchise will be right up your street.
7 Middle-earth: Shadow Of War
On a similar note, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War will be hits with anyone who found themselves engrossed by Geralt’s dark adventure.
In these action RPGs by Monolith Productions, the player takes the role of a ranger named Talion, who is raising an army to try and put a stop to Sauron and his shenanigans. The games are noted for their sombre and mystical tone, stealthy/slashy combat and excellent world-building, all of which are essential boxes to tick for fans of The Witcher.
6 Fallout 4
Bethesda’s 2015 smash-hit Fallout 4 exemplifies a lot of the qualities we’ve discussed so far. As you surely know, it’s an action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world, where the locals are often less than super-friendly and you have to be very picky about your allies.
With dynamic combat, in-depth customization for your character and equipment and a vast, unpredictable world to explore, Fallout 4 is another title that’s sure to appeal to any gamer who dug everything The Witcher 3 had to offer.
5 Horizon Zero Dawn
So far in this rundown, we’ve seen a lot of newer instalments from established, heavy-hitting franchises. In comparison, Horizon Zero Dawn came into our gaming lives out of nowhere. Holy heckola, are we glad it did.
Aloy’s much-beloved adventure was Guerrilla Games’ first shot at an RPG. The team are best known, of course, for the Killzone FPS series, but successfully crafted a deep, engaging and engrossing open-world adventure that critics and players alike couldn’t get enough of.
4 Final Fantasy XV
It hardly needs saying, but the Final Fantasy series has come to be recognized as the very last word in RPGs. Rather, that’s the way it was in the series’ heyday. More recent instalments haven’t quite lived up to that promise (which explains why less recent instalments are being re-released over and over on every darn format known to man, including some brands of sentient toaster).
Final Fantasy XV, the most recent main installment, absolutely wasn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination. What it did do, however, was provide a dynamic and satisfying combat system, some genuine touching moments between core characters and a real sense of exploration and freedom. How does that sound, Witcher fans?
3 Infamous: Second Son
Infamous: Second Son has a lot of parallels with Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s another Sony-exclusive action RPG, this time coming courtesy of Sucker Punch Productions. It tells the story of Delsin Rowe, a young man with superpowers, who battles his way across a futuristic take on Seattle.
The Witcher 3 fans are sure to dig the character customization, the mystical and stunning combat revolving around Rowe’s abilities (hey, ma, look how many particle effects I can throw around) and the moral choices the player is given throughout (which have quite a heavy impact on the way things play out).
2 Dark Souls 3
Yet another franchise that needs no introduction, the Dark Souls games have been gleefully crushing the hopes and dreams of players into sad, salty hunks of spam for years now.
While Bloodborne emphasised the horror angle, the whole dark fantasy thing has always been the series’ shtick. If that’s the kind of vibe you like in your games, Witcher fans, these titles are sure to resonate with you. The class system, which allows the player to specialize in melee or ranged, magical combat according their preference, is very similar too, as is the combat itself.
1 Red Dead Redemption 2
Ah, yes. We’re bringing out the big guns now, friends. If you’re in the market for more open-world action titles with RPG elements and a heavy dose of darkness in the plot, look no further than Red Dead Redemption 2.
There’s no doubt that this is Rockstar’s crowning achievement to date. Heck, it’s arguably the biggest and most impressive open-world title available at the moment. The sheer amount that the team have managed to pack into this title is beyond stunning. All fans of The Witcher 3 owe it to themselves to dive into the life-changing journey of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang.
