Have you gallivanted through the Galar region, or hit up every arena in the game? If so, great! We are glad you are having a blast with Pokémon Sword and Shield. Whether you agree with some of the choices the developers have made or not, there is no denying that this game is a lot of fun. However, this game is pretty big, and are you sure you have encountered everything?
There are tons of Easter eggs, hidden details, and even subtle plotlines that you may have missed on your first, second, or even third playthrough. Contrary to belief, there are parts to Pokémon Sword and Shield that are a bit of a mystery. So, if you need some help circling back around on some of the game’s most elusive plots, see our picks for the ten hidden plotlines in the game.
10 The Tragedy Of Frank And Paula
As we all know, there are side quests in Sword and Shield. They are pretty cool because they accomplish the simple purpose of getting you acquainted with characters and plots outside of the main story. While most are pretty fun, this one is a bit unsettling. Head to Hammerlocke to meet an unassuming little girl named Paula. She will tell you to deliver a letter to Frank. Well, if you are expecting to meet another child, you are wrong. Frank is a grown man with a grandson. He recognized the author of the letter and briefly spoke about little Paula. Is Paula a ghost? What happened to her? This plot may require some extra digging.
9 Figure Out The Nicknames
Here is a little plotline you can enjoy in and outside of the game. Have you ever noticed that every Pokémon Gym Leader in the Galar Region has numbers on the back of their jerseys? Well, they do, and they mean something.
If you take the numbers and match them with Japanese hiragana, you will spell out a pun or nickname for each leader that is related to their story. Why is it only the gym leaders in the Galar Region? What are these names, and what do they mean? That is for you to find out.
8 Play Detective
With Detective Pikachu’s success, you knew we couldn’t have a Pokémon game without including some fun mystery work. This subtle plotline is in Circhester. Go to the city and check out the second hotel located there. If you head up to the second floor, you will meet someone named Howses who is trying to find who ate all the berries that were in a basket in the lobby. You then get the fun job of going around the hotel to nail down the culprits. There better be a magnifying glass involved, we like those.
7 Defeat Morimoto
Everyone isn’t happy about you becoming a Pokémon champion, and they are going to express it one way or another. After you beat the game, head back to Circhester (seeing a pattern with this place?), and have some words with the police officer.
This encounter will unveil that the police officer is Game Freak’s Shigeki Morimoto and that you can defeat his six pretty robust Pokémon to obtain the Oval Charm. This plotline is all about battle, but considering how cool it is that Morimoto makes cameos in various games, we definitely suggest checking this one out.
6 Participate In The Turffield Riddle
This one happens early on in the game since it is the site of the first gym. If you head up the hill and go to the left of the town’s Pokémon Center, you will find a little girl. She will recite a very confusing and downright weird riddle that seems impossible to solve. However, it isn’t. We are not going to spoil the fun of figuring this one out, but just know that there is a treasure buried in the town and that some upright stones can help you solve this one.
5 The Case Of The Missing Minccino
Who would be so flippant as to lose a Minccino? Well, that is the subject of this plot. As you head into Motosoke, you will come across a kid (what is up with all these minors wandering around when pocket monsters are on the loose?), and they will tell you they are looking for their Minccino Pokémon. So, you have the task of wandering around Motosoke with your wits and a whistle to find this water creature. Where are they hiding? Well, those details are in the clues the kid gives you as you embark on your journey. What we want to know is, how did this guy go missing, and what is with the whistle?
4 You Get To Participate In A Little Food Delivery Action
Uber Eats has come to Pokémon in the form of seafood deliveries. This plotline is pretty easy to miss as you have to eat at Hulbury’s restaurant before you can lend your services. After you beat the game, head back to this area and check out the Hulbury Seafood restaurant. You will have three houses to head to where you will receive nuggets as a reward. Once you complete the deliveries, you will get a pleasant surprise for your efforts. Who knew that you could get some DoorDash action in on this slice of life/battle game?
3 What Is Opal’s Deal?
We get that Gym Leaders can be eccentric and different; we are all for it. However, what is going on with Opal? The typical Pokémon Gym Leader is a bit younger and looks as if they are ready to give their remaining adulthood to this cause. Opal, on the other hand, is a bit different.
She is definitely of another generation, uses Fairy-type Pokémon, and her trainers ask you trivia questions on the way to get to her. What is her background? How did she get into this? What is her obsession with fairies and trivia? This is definitely a hidden plotline that we would like to know more about in the future.
2 The Mysterious Case Of The PokeBall Guy
If you have been to a stadium, you’ve seen him. Weird, and propaganda-like, Pokéball guy is there to get you the exotic Pokéballs that you need to win. However, we have some questions, and we also feel that something odd and even unsettling is going on. Who is this person? Why would they want to walk around all day in some mascot-like suit? Who in the world is that happy? As we all know, when it comes to Pokémon, nothing is ever as it seems. There is some deceiving cute aesthetic that is hiding a larger story. Some think this guy is good, while others feel he isn’t. Whatever the case, we are watching you, Pokéball guy.
1 Soothe Bell: Calming Tool Or Manipulation?
We have all heard of the Soothe Bell: a tool that can make it easier to grow your friendship bond with your Pokémon. Now be forewarned, this proposed hidden plotline isn’t going to be friendly and nice, but it’s worth discussing. In this game, while you may cook for your Pokémon and care for them, your goal is to battle them and level-up. So, everything you give that is good to this guy or gal is going to condition them for that purpose. Basically, you are calming your Pokémon to control them. Our apologies for ruining your good time.
