Shooters are just so much fun, aren’t they? What is essentially gaming’s popcorn flick equivalent, shooters have become a massively popular genre and with games like Overwatch and Doom as proof, show they can come in all shapes and sizes. We’re going to see a lot more shooters in 2020 and boy do they look good.
Whether it be games that are being brought back from the dead like Medal of Honor and Half Life or sequels to beloved titles, there’s plenty to be excited for here. Let’s hope all these games stick the landing in 2020, but before that lets all kinds of hyped for the most promising 10.
10 Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond
Medal of Honor wasn’t always the little sibling to the Call of Duty empire that most gamers see it as now. When the game first released in 1999 it was groundbreaking, offering at the time the most realistic depiction of war. It was the Saving Private Ryan of the video game industry, in the sense that both were set in WWII and both left audiences stunned at their attempts of historic accuracy.
It’s been a while since Medal of Honor was in the limelight, but with an upcoming release that is entirely set in virtual reality, it’s possible they might once again make a claim at the FPS throne.
9 Watch Dogs: Legion
Set to release in early March, Watch Dogs Legion is taking on the ambitious task of letting you assume the role of any of the game’s NPCs – yes, that even means grannies. It’s a bizarre twist in a franchise that has left gamers wanting more from the previous two entries; whether that means more polish or for the concept of hacking an entire world to be more fully realized.
Ubisoft is promising fans that this is going to be the Watch Dogs experience that we’ve always wanted since seeing the game’s E3 demo in 2012. Hopefully, Legion isn’t a buggy mess like recent Ubisoft projects and turns out to be a pleasant surprise.
8 Doom Eternal
Doom 2016 was the biggest surprise in gaming in the last decade. Nobody, absolutely no one believed that the original Doom experience could ever be translated into a modern game. If you weren’t born in the 90’s you simply were never going to understand what made the original Doom games so exhilarating and so much fun.
But id Software did the impossible by not only bringing the OG Doom experience into 2016 but also improving upon it in every way imaginable. Doom Eternal has the lofty task of following-up the 2016 masterpiece, but even if it’s more of the same with some improvements here and there, we’ll still be happy.
7 Half-Life: Alyx
Who would’ve guessed that we would’ve ever annoyed Valve enough to actually get Half-Life 3. But not only that, who would’ve guessed that the most anticipated game ever would’ve been entirely immersed in virtual reality.
Half-Life Alyx has it tougher than any game on this list, maybe any game of all-time. Not only does it have to be a sequel to one of the greatest video game franchises ever created, but it has to do it while being a VR game. It’s like Valve is just begging this game to flop, which is weird, but they have a proven track record. So maybe, just MAYBE, they can pull it off.
6 Dying Light 2
Dying Light is one of those games that if you know, you know. It has a fairly large community, but in an age of zombie game fatigue, many gamers remain hesitant in giving Dying Light it’s due. It’s fair, there are too many zombie games and many just rehash the same concept we’ve seen time and time again. But Dying Light is different.
It has the thrilling pace of Titanfall, the preciseness of an Insomniac game and an overall unique feel that has allowed it to be the best zombie game in 2020. Hopefully, Dying Light 2 can rob its predecessor of its title.
5 Resident Evil 3
Sticking with our zombie theme, Capcom is looking to keep the money rolling in with another re-haul of a Resident Evil game. Resident Evil 2 2019 was a fantastic game and seemed to give a lot of gamers a chance to experience the game.
While remakes are generally frowned upon as we see just too many and far too few improvements to warrant a remake in the first place. Capcom is trying to be the exception with so much attention to detail and obvious care being put into the final product of these games. Hopefully, Resident Evil 3 does it’s predecessor justice and isn’t a quick cash grab.
4 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Quarantine
At last year’s E3, Ubisoft announced a “sequel” to their wildly popular game Rainbow Six Siege. Instead of focusing on five-on-five swat-based combat, Quarantine is a co-op experience that will expand upon the story from Siege’s 2018 “Outbreak” event, in which players fought against a mysterious alien virus.
Despite the game being slated for a 2020 release, there aren’t too many details available as of now. But thanks to a recent leak from Reddit there’s a lot more we know about the game (but take all of this with a grain of salt of course). Hopefully, it’s a fine addition to a great multiplayer game.
3 Halo: Infinite
Halo has been dead for a while. Halo 4 copied many of the FPS trends that were made popular by Call of Duty and Titanfall. Halo 5 should be ashamed of itself for one of the worst stories ever told in a Halo game, plus the multiplayer was no better than 4. And the Master Chief collection while great now, was a complete disaster when released.
That brings us to Infinite, the game that is either going to resurrect the franchise or shovel the final piece of dirt on this once legendary series. We’re really hoping for the latter, but we’re not optimistic.
2 The Last Of Us 2
The Last of Us 2 has kept fans eager to get their hands on the long-awaited sequel since it was teased at the PlayStation Experience event in December 2016. There are so many questions that have gnawed at fans for years. Will Joel be in the game? If so will it be a metaphysical appearance or is there some way he’ll come back for real? Will Ellie’s love interest make it out of the first chapter?
It’s so exciting, and Naughty Dog has been rightfully stubborn about releasing any key details. This could be the last great game for the PS4 and we can’t wait.
1 Cyberpunk 2077
SHOCKING! One of the most anticipated games of all time that is not only serving as a follow-up to one of the masterpieces that is The Witcher 3, but is also shaping up to be quite an ambitious undertaking in its own right. It also has Keanu Reeves, which may be random, but is just too damn cool.
This game is just too big to fail – if it was being handled by EA, Activision or Bethesda we’d fear the worst. Loot boxes! Expensive cosmetics! Withheld content! Oh My! But we trust CD Projekt Red to get the job done, and boy are we excited for April.
