Every game has its powerful weapons, trinkets, and armor sets, and World of Warcraft Classic has a collection that people still talk about 15 years later. Not all of the following items will be glowing blades, purple trinkets, or legendary drops.
There are plenty of overpowered items for lowbies on this list, too, including a few notorious twink weapons that don’t appear in the modern version of the game.
10 Sulfuras, Hand Of Ragnaros
Why do we run a raid? For the epic gear, of course! This could be the best-known two-handed mace in the game. Paladins and Shamas were the two classes that often sought the weapon out, as they were often the only players who were trained to use a two-handed mace. It provided a nice fire resistance buff and gave the wielder the power to fireballs and do fire damage to melee attackers. This weapon is also unique in the sense that it isn’t a drop itself, but something that you had to make using a drop called the Eye of Sulfuras from Ragnaros in Molten Core. as part of a long and arduous quest chain.
9 Gravestone Scepter
A famous twink weapon from back in the day, this was a high-quality blue that characters from level 29 and up could wield provided they were trained to use wands. It was practically a mandatory accessory for Mage twinks. The wand looks fairly normal at first, but what makes it OP is the 29 damage per second. That’s insane for a character at that level. Both Alliance and Horde casters can obtain this wand as long as they can complete a quest in Blackfathom Deeps called “Blackfathom Villainy.” The tricky part is that the character you’re required to slay to complete it, Kelris, hardly ever spawns.
8 Headmaster’s Charge
It’s the design of this nasty looking thing that really makes it a must-have, and the stats are the icing on this gruesome cupcake. The great thing about the Headmaster’s charge is that it wasn’t just great for you, it was also beneficial to your party. When you equipped it, it gave you and your friends a +20 to Intellect. The buff stacks with Arcane Brilliance so you can have both on at the same time, and since Intellect is used by many different classes any caster with a staff proficiency can use this. Darkmaster Gandling, the final boss in Scolomance, has a mere 2% chance to drop this which is pretty high compared to some of the other treasures on this list.
7 Furbolg Medicine Pouch
The Furbolg reputation grind is one of the toughest ones you’ll do. And you have to do at least a portion of it to access Wintersrping, one of the game’s most scenic high-level areas. The Furbolgs sell high-level patterns and recipes to those that have been rewarded a Friendly status with them, which requires many dead enemy Furbolgs and armloads of purple headdress feathers. This particular OP item, the Furbolg Medicine Pouch, is an item you can buy from a vendor named Gorn One Eye after you’ve proven yourself worthy.
The healing capabilities of this pouch are pretty impressive anyway, no matter the level, but it was also used as a powerful twink item. You have to be level 52 or over to use the healing abilities of the pouch, but ’toons of a much lower level could equip it and get a high-level stamina boost.
6 Thunderfury, Blessed Blade Of The Windseeker
Another legendary that comes from the same era as Sulfuras, the Thunderfury blade and the infamous mace of Ragnaros both have a few things in common. Each weapon was obtained after a long quest chain and required assembly at the very end, and both were heavily sought after by certain classes. Each one had some crazy stats and procs, and in the case of the Thunderfury blade, that meant some crazy nature and fire resistance buffs. When a player wielded the blade, it could cast a bolt of chain lightning, dealing damage on up to five enemies and lowering their nature resistance. It also had a wicked design, complete with dual blades on one hilt with a sparkling electric center.
5 Corrupted Ashbringer
The story of the Corrupted Ashbringer actually makes up one of the main tenets in Classic WoW lore. It’s connected to the story of Highlord Alexandros Mograine, and drops from the Four Horseman encounter in the Naxxramas raid. When a player equips this sword in certain areas, it triggers different events. You become hostile to the Argent Dawn and they kill you on sight, but the minions of the Scarlet Monastery will kneel before you. You can also hear Mograine’s dead voice speaking to you through the sword. The search for the pure counterpart of this unholy blade is a legendary one, and it was so popular at one point that Blizzard had to publicly confirm that it was unobtainable.
4 Lightforged Blade
Another twink weapon, this was a favorite of Paladins because of the buff granted to Holy spells, but anyone with a sword proficiency could equip it. And when we say anyone, we mean it. In the original version of WoW, the sword had no level requirement even though it was obtained as a reward from a high-level quest. Plus, it was a “bind on equip” (BoE) item. The result was a lot of lowbie players got this level 47 weapon in their mailboxes. At that level, the damage was normal, but imagine this weapon in the hands of a Paladin in a starting area.
3 Lucky Fishing Hat
Don’t be surprised that some items not even meant for combat can also be overpowered. It goes to show that game designers have a wacky sense of humor. This is one of the most coveted items in the game and one of the most difficult to get. It’s not the reward at the end of a long quest chain, the medal of honor for prowess in PVP or a drop from a fearsome boss.
It’s the Lucky Fishing Hat, the prize for catching a rare Keefer’s Angelfish during the Stranglethorn Fishing Contest. It looks like a normal green hat, but check out that crazy stamina buff. Warlocks grind their fishing up just to get their hands on this overpowered hat.
2 Quel’Serrar
If you spend enough time in Dire Maul you might be able to obtain this powerful blade. The sword is the final reward at the end of a long quest chain that starts with a book that drops in the ogre-infested dungeon located in Feralas. The book only drops from bosses, and it’s quite rare, so you may have to do some DM farming to find it. The quest chain itself is relatively easy, but finding the book is the toughest part. If you’re a tank in Classic WoW, this is one of the most powerful weapons you can wield. The stamina buff makes you much harder to kill, which makes you much more useful as a tank and well-loved by healers.
1 Truefaith Vestments
A purple item, these robes were short of legendary in name only. The Truefaith Vestments was specifically for Priests and provided a healthy stamina buff along with bonuses to healing spells and effects, reducing the cooldown of Fade, and increasing mana regeneration. The robes are some of the best a Priest can wear, and there’s also the status to go along with them. The pattern drops from Balnazaar in Stratholme, and that’s the raid boss, not the regular dungeon run. Although the pattern isn’t “bind on pick-up” the robes are, so you have to be both a Priest and a high-level tailor to use the robes.
