With the thousands upon thousands of video game characters we have today, we’ve seen crossovers like Super Smash Bros., Street Fighter x Tekken, Playstation All-Stars, and many more to bring them together. Seeing our favorite villains and heroes alike duke it out in a fighting game is always a treat.
Modern titles are especially prone to adding guest characters with Downloadable Content, where we’d happily pay an extra six or seven bucks for our beloved personas to punch each other in the face. While we’re certainly seeing an increase in odd guest characters in our favorite fighting games, which highly anticipated ones have yet to appear?
10 Madeline: Celeste
In early 2018, we were gifted with a beautifully crafted indie platformer in the form of Celeste. This game takes masterful level-design and refined platforming and applies it to an endearing story with lovable characters. Celeste’s main character, Madeline is climbing Celeste Mountain and begins to discover many things about herself.
As a fighting game character, Madeline would obviously be heavily focused on platforming, using her air dashing both as a movement option and an attack. The most imaginable game for her to appear in would be Rivals of Aether, with Smash Bros. style platforming gameplay being a perfect fit for her.
9 Tracer: Overwatch
2016’s smash-hit Overwatch received critical acclaim for its beautiful art style and high-paced first-person shooter combat. While not nearly as popular as it was at its release, an Overwatch character could for sure work within a competitive fighting game.
Tracer is arguably the most iconic character from the game, and she could utilize her dual-pistols and speedy movement to zip around like a fragile but powerful character. Many fighting games don’t include characters who are primarily focused on ranged combat, but Tracer could be a unique change of pace.
8 Cuphead
Coined as an extremely difficult platforming experience, Cuphead actually takes a lot more inspiration from fighting games than you’d think. Bosses like Ribby and Croaks take very clear inspiration from Street Fighter II, and some of Cuphead’s abilities like the Charge Shot and Energy Beam being clear nods to familiar fighting games.
As a fighter himself, Cuphead could play a lot like Megaman in Super Smash Bros., using his basic projectile attacks and skills to wall-out opponents and fight from afar. Taking Cuphead’s difficulty into consideration, his playstyle would definitely make opponents feel like they’re combating the final boss of a platformer.
7 Impa: The Legend of Zelda
As one of the most highly requested first-party additions to Super Smash Bros., Impa’s Hyrule Warrior’s appearance shows her as a Sheik-like warrior who wields mighty weapons like a naginata or giant sword.
Looking at her agile, ninja-like moveset from Hyrule Warriors shows just how well she would fit into the game alongside other Zeldafavorites. The Zelda series does host considerably fewer characters than Nintendo’s other big franchises like Super Mario, so another addition to the cast would be more than welcome.
6 Artorias: Dark Souls
The Dark Souls series has solidified itself in mainstream gaming, but we’ve still yet to see any brawling representation from it. One of the most iconic characters in the series is Artorias the Abysswalker from the original Dark Souls, where he’s fought in a truly epic duel between two warriors in a crumbling colosseum.
He’s a noble and tragic knight, and his knighthood is shown within his skillful usage of the blade. In a game like Soul Calibur, Artorias would be a perfect contender for a weapon-based fighter, using his trusty greatsword to deal devastating blows to foes.
5 Steve: Minecraft
Steve has been one of the most highly requested DLC inclusions for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and his inclusion has been met with curiosity and intrigue. In a platforming fighting game, Steve’s movement would certainly be a bit odd, as he’s made out of blocks and all.
But, if perfected to look right within the game, Steve has a lot of potential in his multitude of weapons, tools, and blocks to craft his way to victory. Alternate skins would be a cake-walk as well, with so many unique Minecraft skins available.
4 The Knight: Hollow Knight
Like Madeline, Hollow Knight would be a great inclusion into the fighting game genre to bring more indie titles into the spotlight. Only a few notable indie characters have appeared in fighters thus far, and that could all change in the future.
In regards to gameplay, The Knight has plenty of moves with that adorably small sword and skills to show off in battle. He’d fit extremely well within a platform fighter, utilizing his Metroidvania inspired gameplay to its fullest.
3 Sora: Kingdom Hearts
Looking at the Kingdom Hearts series, its over-the-top, fast-paced action combat would culminate extremely well into a moveset for our favorite Keyblade wielder. Currently sitting at the top of the charts for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter ballot, Sora is one of the most requested characters to date.
He’s loved so much, in fact, that he appears s a character in the fan-made Super Smash Flash 2. With such a vast array of different attacks and magics to harness in battle, it would be an absolute no-brainer to see Sora appear next to other influential characters like Link and Marth.
2 Leon Kennedy: Resident Evil
This zombie-killing hunk of a man has made quite a name for himself in multiple Resident Evil titles, and his inclusion into the fray would be nothing short of perfect. As a rookie police officer within Resident Evil 2, fans quickly fell in love with him to the point of him returning as the main character in Resident Evil 4 and is playable in the sixth game.
The recent Resident Evil 2 Remake is a perfect opportunity to bring him back into the limelight to shine on the battlefield. With a plethora of zombie-slaying weapons and hand-to-hand combat, Leon would instantly become a fan-favorite all over again.
1 Kazuma Kiryu: Yakuza
Kiryu remains as possibly the most requested character to be included in Tekken 7, and for good reason. The Yakuza series is a beat ’em up set in Japan featuring our favorite friends from the Yakuza. Kiryu has a wide variety of fighting styles throughout the series and even just looking at one of them brings forth so many ideas for his implementation into the world of Tekken.
There has actually been a sizable amount of backlash against Bandai Namco for his absence from the game, as he is quite literally the perfect fit for the game. One day, Kiryu. One day.
