We’ve come to an interesting point in the development of video game consoles. Currently, the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X battle it out for the best graphics, 4K gameplay and HDR settings. These enhanced versions of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can be viewed as a new generation within themselves, or at least a half-way house between this generation and the next.
With more and more rumours circulating about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two, it seems we are closer than ever for the next powerhouse consoles to hit the market. The next generation promises insane graphics, true 4K gameplay and much more. These consoles could even begin to rival PC gaming.
With the palpable excitement surrounding a lot of upcoming games, we at TheGamer list the top 10 games to expect on next-generation consoles.
11 11. Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt Red have already made their mark on the gaming industry, with The Witcher franchise taking over the RPG world. The Witcher 3 has become a staple video game of the 21st century, one of the most loved RPGs around and a landmark for innovative gaming. So, when the gaming giant announced a new IP, Cyberpunk 2077, a futuristic cyber-punk game with a neon-noir feel and remarkable technology, fans went wild.
As of today, we’ve seen a fair amount of content from the game, including a 48-minute gameplay reveal. However, with no definitive release date, and a long history of games improving massively from show-off gameplay builds, it’s safe to suggest this may be one of the big IP’s coming to the next-generation consoles.
10 10. The Elder Scrolls VI
After years and years of fans begging for news on the next installment of The Elder Scrolls franchise, Bethesda finally announced The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018. It’s been a long, long time coming, especially with the insane number of re-releases of Skyrim.
We don’t know much about this game, other than it is years away from release, so don’t expect to be playing a new Elder Scrolls game until the next-generation of consoles land in your living room.
9 9. Starfield
A completely new Bethesda IP announced at E3 2018, Starfield teases an epic space fantasy coming to next-generation consoles. That’s about all we know about it, and we’re hoping this can revitalize Bethesda after the rocky launch of Fallout 76 with it being their first new franchise in 25 years.
So far, all we have is a 1-minute teaser, which doesn’t really tell us much at all. Nonetheless, we’re pretty excited to see more of what Starfield has to offer.
8 8. System Shock 3
System Shock 3 is in development from Otherside Entertainment and looks to provide a beautiful, frightening experience, reinvigorating the old franchise and bringing it to the younger gamers who may have missed out on this classic. There’s no current release date, suggesting this may be holding out to release on next-generation consoles.
In a recent update it seems that Otherside Entertainment have split from the game’s publisher Starbreeze. It’s also important to note that studio Nightdive Studios started a Kickstarter for their own remake of System Shock which is looking to be a fantastic remake of a classic game.
7 7. Final Fantasy VII Remake
Everyone, absolutely everyone wants to see Cloud come to life with Final Fantasy XV’s graphical prowess and stunning visuals. With the announcement trailer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake back at E3 2015, and some more footage revealed at PSX 2015, this game has been a long time coming. Unfortunately, this has become the norm with Square Enix titles (we waited 14 years for Kingdom Hearts III, 14 years!).
Whilst this title may still release on the PlayStation 4, it may have to wait until the next generation of consoles until it sees the light of day.
6 6. Death Stranding
Death Stranding is Metal Gear Solid legend Kojima’s creative love child which is just a bizarre, dark and wacky as you’d expect from the man himself. A lot of mystery surrounds this game, with big names like Guillermo Del Toro, Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen being heavily involved we’re excited to see where this new dark narrative takes us.
This is currently to be released on the PS4 Pro, however, there is no set release date which could see this game become part of the next-generation console line-up.
5 5. Beyond Good And Evil 2
One of the most emotional and awe-inspiring announcements of E3 2018 was Ubisoft’s Beyond Good and Evil 2 reveal. You play as a customizable space pirate as you explore the vast open world the game has to offer. A graphical feat, this game boasts beautiful environments, smooth mechanics and a massive open world to have fun in.
In a gameplay update video the game’s many flying mechanics and battles are highlighted along with a massive open solar system that is yours to explore.
4 4. The Last Of Us 2
The Last of Us is one of the most loved survival horror games of all time, and gives the zombie horror genre a new, chilling feel. You haven’t felt terror until you have a bunch of clickers chasing you down! Naughty Dog are releasing the long wanted sequel, The Last of Us 2, which is set five years after the end of the original game. A game franchise (and company) that stays true to bringing us harrowing, thought out and developed narrative games, we’re very excited to see The Last of Us 2 and hope it is on the official line up for the next-generation PlayStation.
3 3. Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite was announced at the Xbox E3 2018 conference, where they showed off a short demonstration of the powerful new game engine. The Slipspace Engine shows off remarkable graphics and realistic lighting, further blurring the lines between what is real and what is video game graphics. Stated to be ‘Xbox One X enhanced’ we’re hoping that this title can cross the bridge into the next-generation of consoles and provide for an unforgettable graphical experience.
2 2. Dying Light 2
Dying Light was a phenomenon in the zombie horror genre, taking an oversaturated genre and adding parkour. It sounds like a bizarre mix, but this game proved it worked. This game is first person Assassins Creed, but with zombies.
With years of success and many ‘enhanced’ editions later, it’s no surprise Dying Light 2 was announced at E3 2018. We’re hoping that the original games outdated graphics are brought to the next-generation with enhanced graphics and an entirely new survival story.
1 1. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
This game was thought to be dead in the water when it was originally announced to be launched in 2012. Now it seems that GSC Game World are back with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, putting up a very simple teaser website which has the title and 2.0.2.1. on the page, suggesting a 2021 release. Other than this, we know nothing about this game, but with such a late release date it is possible this game will land on the next-generation of consoles if it does indeed see the light of day.
