There’s been a lot of great remakes coming out in the last few years. Among them have been The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and even the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy 7. With all these great classics finding their way to modern consoles, we can’t help but take a look back at one of our favorite handhelds. The DS library hosts hundreds of games, many of which hold a special place in gamers’ hearts.
To honor one of the most innovative handheld consoles to date and the many games its library holds, we have put together the list of games that we would love to see remade for current generation consoles.
Updated February 26, 2022, by Jessica Filby: Nostalgia is a huge part of gaming, it’s why everyone goes back to the likes of Pokemon, Zelda, and Mario. However, no matter how many games are released on the Switch, there are some that many just can’t let go of. All you want to do is play the games that brought you so much joy, sitting in your bedroom or the back of the car, DS in hand, shouting a dog’s name, cooking meals, or even riding an adorable Yoshi across a 2D world. These games just have to be brought onto the Nintendo Switch!
15 Cooking Mama
Launching in 2006, Cooking Mama is a legendary game where you follow Mama’s instructions to cook some delicious meals. It was a fan favorite and required little effort, yet everyone loved to play this wonderful game! So while there may be versions of Cooking Mama on the Switch, nothing compares to the original.
It may not be the most thrilling game in the world but if you had a DS and played during 2006, then this game will most likely be stuck in your memory as one that filled everyone’s heart with joy. It was simple, adorable, and undeniably one of the most fun games you could play.
14 Sonic Rush
While there are some fun Sonic games on the Switch, nothing is the same as good old Sonic Rush. It was a thrilling, fast-paced game that brought so many people into the beloved series, and rightly so. It was an incredibly fun game to play and one that just has to be put onto the Switch again!
It was one of those games where the graphics never needed to be anything special since the gameplay was just so perfect. Sometimes when you pick up the Nintendo Switch, all you want is a good bit of fast-paced nostalgia, and Sonic Rush brings it.
13 Ace Attorney
Released in 2001 and then bringing in five main series spin-offs, Ace Attorney was one of the best games available on the Nintendo DS. It was a wonderful adventure game that brought new styles and new fun, being in the style of a visual novel. Nevertheless, it was a game unlike any other and will never be forgotten.
Due to its popularity, Ace Attorney leaves many switch players begging for it to be introduced again. You may know the ins and outs of this wonderful game, but no amount of playing will ever take away how good it is.
12 Professor Layton
It’s worth mentioning that there has been a Professor Layton made for the Nintendo Switch, but it’s relatively clear this just isn’t the same as the classic adventures of Professor Layton and his self-proclaimed apprentice, Luke. There were so many wonderful mini-games and puzzles in the DS series that hold a special place in so many people’s hearts. So when Layton’s Mystery Journey was released, fans had high hopes.
For some, the newer game delivered and filled that Layton-sized hole, but for many, it will never hit the spot that the previous games did. Sometimes all we need is a little remaster to get right back into those challenging puzzles.
11 PictoChat
There were many things that brought a smile with the DS console, but one shines above any game you could buy. It was free, it was fun, and most of all, it was a bit of software that everyone loved. PictoChat was an incredibly simple aspect of the DS in which you could talk to other DS players nearby by drawing nice pictures or writing in your message with the stylus. That being said, you weren’t a true DS player if you didn’t try and color in the whole screen.
Now it may not have the same feel with the Switch, but there was something incredibly satisfying about PictoChat that deserves to be recognized and brought onto the Switch.
10 Nintendogs
Nintendogs was one of the most popular games to come out on the Nintendo DS. The game has you adopt up to three adorable puppies to take care of. Nintendogs goes off of your system’s internal clock to determine when it’s time to walk and feed your puppies. The more time you spend taking care of them and training them, the higher your chances of winning obedience competitions would be.
Nintendogs took full advantage of the DS system’s technology to let your dogs respond to voice commands and be petted using the system’s touch screen. Just imagine how an improved version of this game could take advantage of phone and Switch hardware.
9 Lost in Blue
Lost in Blue was a cult success that didn’t sell well upon its initial release. Surprisingly though, the game series became quite popular, and several sequels ended up being released on DS and the Nintendo Wii. The game has multiple endings and follows the story of two teens washed up on a deserted island after becoming the victims of a shipwreck.
The survival game used the touchscreen and microphone to help the player perform tasks such as starting a fire. We would love to see the difficult survival game remade to take advantage of the Switch’s hardware.
8 The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Phantom Hourglass was a direct sequel to The Wind Waker. The game has Link traveling the seas with Tetra; soon enough, they encounter danger as Tetra is once again kidnapped. The crew sets out to rescue Tetra from the ghostship and must uncover the secrets of The Realm of the Ocean Kind to do so.
Phantom Hourglass, along with Spirit Tracks, both deserve a remake so that everybody can enjoy the unique atmospheres of these quirky Wind Waker sequels. We would love to see a dual pack release of these games with better graphics for the Switch.
7 Super Princess Peach
Super Princess Peach is the only game that gives the princess her own starring role. In the game, Bowser sets out to still the Vibe Septor, a powerful tool that can control the emotions of others. In addition, Bowser has also captured the Mario Brothers along with tons of Toads forcing Princess Peach to take the fate of Vibe island and the Mushroom Kingdom into her own hands.
This platformer has Princess Peach using her set of four emotions to fight her way through eight worlds. Seeing as this is the only game one of our favorite Mario heroines stars in, we can’t help but want to see it update for Nintendo Switch.
6 Pokemon Diamond & Pearl
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are two games that fans highly speculate are currently in development for the Nintendo Switch. Diamond and Pearl are based in the Sinnoh region, where the fourth generation of Pokemon had their debut. The game had several unique features like The Underground, that let you make and share your very own hidden secret base.
The games, if they came to Switch, would allow players to catch a broad spectrum of older monsters and hopefully transfer them to Sword & Shield. Either way, these games are the next in line to have a remake after the release of Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby.
5 Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is a game that has been stuck on the DS. The game starts off in a sky city where the Celestrians live. The main protagonist begins the game by helping his people grow the fruit that will allow them to ascend into the realm of the gods. Sadly they are attacked and plummet to the human world below where the main character loses his wings.
The game takes you on a quest to help your people ascend and defeat the evil that has started to take over the land. Dragon Quest 9 especially needs a port since many fans have yet to play this entry.
4 Yoshi’s Island DS
Yoshi’s Island DS is the sequel to Yoshi’s Island and can currently only be played if you own a DS. The game features Yoshi as he chases down Bowser with baby Mario in an attempt to save Luigi. The game features baby versions of several of the Mario world’s favorite characters like Peach, Donkey Kong, and Wario. Each baby has special abilities to help you traverse through the stages.
Yoshi’s Island is an adorable game filled with cartoonish art and fun platforming mechanics. Bringing the Yoshi’s Island games to Switch would be a treat for Yoshi fans all over the world.
3 Kirby Squeak: Squad
Kirby Squeak: Squad follows the adventures of Kirby, who is chasing down a band of rats that he believes have stolen his cake. Soon enough, it’s revealed that the treasure the Squeak Squad stole was a dangerous chest containing a dark power. In the game, Kirby must use his various powers to chase down his new foes all the way across Dreamland. The plot is comical, and the levels have unique designs with fun boss fights lurking at the end.
Kirby Squeak: Squad is a classic Kirby game that fans of the DS loved. Seeing this game remade on the Switch would be a great way to introduce the Squeaks to a new generation.
2 Harvest Moon: DS Cute
The Harvest Moon series has been seeing a plethora of remakes with both Rune Factory 4 and Friends of Mineral Town, getting remakes for the Nintendo Switch. The game takes place in the neighboring valley to Mineral Town. Forget-Me-Not Valley is full of familiar faces that starred in A Wonderful Life for PS2 and GameCube.
The game introduces a rival dating system and more datable characters than ever before. We would love to see this companion town come out since we are already getting to see Mineral Town on the Switch!
1 Pokemon Conquest
Pokemon Conquest is one of the interesting spin-off games that appeared only on the Nintendo DS. The game crosses over with the Nobunaga Ambition series and has strategy-based battles that will test the trainer’s abilities in a whole new way. You start out with just an Eevee and must find your way through the Ransei region gaining new friends and challenging enemies.
While this may not be the traditional Pokemon game players are used to, it added an interesting twist to the series and was a solid spin-off title. Remaking Conquest could eventually even lead to other SRPG spin-offs. Who knows? After all, the future for both Pokemon and Nintendo are brighter than ever!
