Remakes and sequels are the bread and butter of almost all forms of media nowadays, and video games are no exception. Whether it be porting every game imaginable to the Switch, or from the ground up remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus, remakes are a constant in the industry. Sequels also see the same amount of attention, which spawning franchises being a number one goal of many publishers. I think I’ve seen Mario more than most of my family members at this point. I mean really, why make something brand new when you can make something … not new! See, it makes sense!

In all seriousness, it makes much more sense for a studio to put resources into a known property rather than take risks with new titles. As such, sequels and remakes are omnipresent in the industry, and there are currently many such titles in production. Whether it be a sequel or a remake, in this list we have 15 titles that are currently set to be released in 2019, along with 10 titles that are highly likely to receive a remake or sequel sooner rather than later. So from Link’s Awakening’s cute new art style to Catherine: Full Body’s confusingly named Qatherine (literally what), let’s jump into the list. Make sure to sound off on what titles you would like to see receive a remake or sequel down in the comments below!

The classic Game Boy game Link’s Awakening is being remade for the Switch from the ground up. Shook.

This is one of the many Zelda titles that is in need of a bit of an update. I mean look, moving from the Game Boy to the Game Boy Color is big, but we need bigger.

Getting to see the game with full, 3D color visuals is great, and the Switch will lend itself to a great new control scheme for the game. Hopefully, we get this title in our hands sooner rather than later!

24 Possible Remake: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered

2016’s remastering of Modern Warfare sets the scene for a remake of the game’s sequel, Modern Warfare 2. This would make older fans of the series very excited, which could prompt them to buy the title (or whatever game it is attached to). It would also give the series the story mode that year’s Black Ops 4 was missing, without all the work of creating an entirely new narrative.

Hopefully, this remake will be released in a way that isn’t terrible to fans and also not include microtransactions!

I mean, it will but we can hope.

23 Sequel: Pokémon Shield And Sword

Pokémon is finally making its way to the Switch! I mean it definitely already had a Switch entry but let’s not talk about that. Anywho, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are headed to the Switch this year, and the title features a new region, graphical updates and new starter Pokemon, such as Grookey and the other two! With the advanced power of the Switch, we could see changes implemented to the series that will blow us all away! This is sure to be one of the series’ biggest and best adventures yet!

22 Possible Sequel: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

During the Pokemon Direct for Shield and Sword, it was mentioned that there will be more Pokémon news throughout the year. I think it’s the perfect time for a new Mystery Dungeon game to come to Switch. Release it featuring all the new Pokémon from Shield and Sword and fans will go crazy! Considering we haven’t gotten a new installment in years, now is the perfect time.

Or, give us DS games on this system Nintendo and I will gladly pay full price for a Mystery Dungeon game you literally already developed.

Choice is yours!

21 Remake: Saints Row The Third: The Full Package

Weirdly, Saints Row The Third: The Full Package, is coming to the Switch on May 10th. Why they chose to release this, which isn’t even the newest title in the series, is a bit odd. However, the game is coming with almost all the DLC packaged in with it, and new co-op modes. What is notable is that the title can now be bought for about $5 on other platforms, so it will be interesting to see how intense the Switch tax is on this title.

20 Sequel: The Last Of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II is likely one of the most anticipated games of the decade. A follow up to, shockingly, The Last of Us, the PS4 exclusive is eyeing a likely release date of late 2019. Sony is using this title as one of the last big system sellers for the PS4. With Naughty Dog’s previous track record with games such as the Uncharted series, this should be a knock out of the park.

19 Remake: Assassin’s Creed 3

Assassin’s Creed 3 + Liberation will be coming to Switch this year. This will be the second Assassin’s Creed game to come to the Switch (at least in Japan). The game was previewed in the most recent Nintendo Direct and, well, it sure can run on the system.

Whether or not it was running well is a different story, but, you know, it runs.

It will include the remaster of Liberation as well, originally a PS Vita exclusive. That’s funny, remember when that system existed?

18 Sequel: Box Boy! + Box Girl!

Box Boy! + Box Girl! (finally, the female protagonist we deserve) is coming to Nintendo Switch digitally on April 26th. The title was revealed in the most recent Nintendo Direct and will feature just under 300 levels, along with multiple playable protagonists (all while adding to that deep, deep Box Boy! lore, of course). The game will also feature co-op play, and will likely satisfy the billions of people who have been waiting for this title.

17 Possible Remake: Metroid Prime Trilogy

The idea of a Metroid Prime Trilogy gussied up for the Switch has been floating around for over a year. It seems to be almost a given in order to give fans a chance to catch up on the series and, hey, make a lil money for Nintendo. It would also give us a glimpse into how 4 would control on Switch.

But hey, we don’t need that, we can all just pull out our Wii Us and play it on there … right?

We all have one of those!

16 Sequel: Luigi’s Mansion 3

Another Switch exclusive for 2019, we have Luigi’s Mansion 3! The original Luigi’s Mansion launched with the GameCube before receiving a 3DS sequel. The launch of a brand new title on the system brings a lot of opportunity to take the best of both of the first two entries and make a great game out of them, all while adding new elements. I think a moral system where you get the option to choose whether or not you want to save Mario, in the end, is the way to go.

15 Possible Remake: Super Mario Sunshine

Since Nintendo is absolutely bent on making sure we can’t give them money, it seems unlikely that we’ll be getting a GameCube virtual console. Instead, it’s more likely that we’ll be getting individual GameCube titles remade. One that fans would love to see is Super Mario Sunshine. This game could stand to have some bugs squashed, receive some streamlining and a few new features, and of course an HD makeover. I mean while we’re at it I’ll take Galaxy too.

14 Remake: Catherine: Full Body

The puzzle platformer Catherine is receiving a remaster for PS4 and Vita (HA!) this year. The title is set for release in September in the states, while it was released in February in Japan.

The game has many new features, such as an all-new love interest named Qatherine (???), and a new playable character in the form of Persona 5’s Joker for some reason, along with all sorts of other new content. This is certainly the way to do a remake, a complete visual upgrade along with a host of brand new content.

13 Sequel: The Walking Dead: The Final Season: Episode 4

Clementine’s story will be coming to an end this year. The fourth and final episode of Skybound’s The Walking Dead: The Final Season will be releasing in March of 2019. The final season has had a rough time, moving to Skybound after the shuttering of Telltale Studios after the laying off of almost every employee with no prior notice. However, it now seems that most of Telltale’s staff that was working on the title are continuing to do so at Skybound, meaning they got to keep their livelihood, and the staff that originally envisioned Clementine and her story get to finish off it off as they had planned.

12 Possible Remake: Final Fantasy VII

Ah, the fabled Final Fantasy VII remake. So, we do know that this title exists, and we also know that it’s probably coming out in 2034. But hey, 2019 hasn’t been specifically ruled out by anyone! This game has had a weird development cycle

It started at some point before 2015, and was at one point, episodic? Why would that ever be the case?

Either way, it’s about time we get this game, otherwise, we could be seeing it for the PS5.

11 Sequel: Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite is coming! That’s about all we know. Oh, and microtransactions, yay! Whether or not this game is coming this year or 2020 isn’t known, along with whether or not it might appear on Microsoft’s next-generation console. It will serve as a sequel to Halo 5, and as usual, will be developed by 343. Considering all that news about Microsoft wanting their games on Switch, well, you might be seeing Master Chief on a Nintendo console pretty soon here.

10 Possible Remake: Super Mario 3D World

With Nintendo’s “Port Everything to the Switch” initiative in full effect, it’s likely we’ll see more than a few more Wii U ports before all is said and done. With Super Mario 3D World being the second best selling title on the system, it’s only natural it will make it to the Switch sooner rather than later.

It’s likely we’ll see a few new additions, such as some new characters, and nothing else groundbreaking, along with a $60 price tag.

Yay!

9 Sequel: Yoshi’s Crafted World

The “so adorable I want to throw up” Yoshi’s Crafted World is coming to the Switch in March. The successor to the painfully underrated Yoshi’s Wooly World, this game puts you in the role of Yoshi in his newest platformer outing. This game’s hook is the ability to flip the level backward after going through once, then finding an array of secrets you missed the first time! Did I mention that it is absolutely adorable?

8 Possible Remake: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

You no longer need 14 systems and 27 different cables to play Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, as it is being remade for the Nintendo Switch and PS4. The game originally required, in order for full multiplayer to be played, 4 Game Boys and link cables for all of them, along with, of course, the GameCube. The game is now ridiculous if you want to play it to the fullest, which is why the remake is widely anticipated. Hopefully, we see it sooner rather than later.

7 Sequel: Team Sonic Racing

Team Sonic Racing, releasing in May of 2019, is the newest Sonic racing game after 2012’s Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The game is similar to Sonic Heroes, in that the game uses team-based racing, consisting of three different characters.

The game will have many different modes, including a full campaign.

Let’s just hope that this is one of the better Sonic games, as we all know that this series is full of titles that are of … um, varying degrees of quality.

6 Remake: Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is coming to all modern consoles in June. After the recent re-release of the first 3 Crash titles on these systems, fans have been requesting the racing title to get a remake as well. It’s interesting that they chose to release this title now, with the recent release of the monstrous smash hit Nickelodeon Kart Racers still being the #1 selling game in every single market in the world. It’s a brave move, that’s for sure.
