The next Call of Duty game will be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. But it’s hardly the first Modern Warfare game in the Call of Duty franchise.
Activision has been keeping us in suspense for quite a while. We knew that a new Call of Duty was coming, as you can pretty much mark the passing of the seasons with every new CoD game, but we didn’t know what it would be called. Or what it would be about. Or much of anything, really, other than it was to be made by Infinity Ward.
Well, now we know what the game will be called. The news comes courtesy of YouTuber LongSensation, who has been playing a preview version of the game for the past week or so along with a whole bunch of other streamers. He tweeted out the name, which was then picked up by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who reached out to Activision to get confirmation. Which he did. Although we kinda wish he hadn’t.
The 2019 Call of Duty game is called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
This is a very confusing name. The first Modern Warfare was actually the fourth Call of Duty game called Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This spawned its own subseries of Modern Warfare games with the most recent being a remake of the first Modern Warfare called Remastered Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
So this fourth Modern Warfare game will not be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as with the previous iterations in the sub-series since the fourth Modern Warfare was actually a remaster of the first one. Instead, the fourth Modern Warfare (which is really the fifth Modern Warfare) will be a “soft reboot” simply titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Confusing? Yes.
We don’t know the precise release date for Modern Warfare, but we do know it’ll be sometime this fall. It’ll also have a bunch of heart-wrenching and soul-destroying moments as with Modern Warfare 2 when you killed a bunch of civilians, according to Kotaku.
