The Walking Dead had been one of those popular shows you could never say a word against. At the height of its popularity, you would be lambasted for saying you don’t watch the series. Presently, the case is the opposite and hardly anyone claims themselves to be a proud Walking Dead fan. Game of Thrones has taken that mantle (although personally, that show feels insanely boring) and The Walking Dead is flanked by former fans who keep crying about the glory days.
What they overlook is that even in those days of peak popularity a lot of the elements of the show didn’t make sense. There are several one can think off the top of their head as well. You need to suspend your belief system when it comes to a zombie show. But even then the show has made some logical errors that make it much harder for the developers to keep up with all the intricate details. In addition to that, the show does adhere to real world laws of physics and biology when not considering the Walkers themselves. But there are dozens of instances where these laws are overlooked.
Finally, there are some plot points that have been left hanging, whose lack of resolution also present some illogical moments. Here are 25 Memes that show times The Walking Dead didn’t make sense.
25 Instant Fail
King Ezekiel’s flair for drama could get annoying to some viewers. There was hardly any time when he didn’t seem to be spewing Shakespearean dialect at whoever he was in conversation with. There was an adequate explanation given for such flamboyancy he displayed in that he was an actor before the state of the world went south thanks to the zombie apocalypse. He became a ‘King’ thanks to this exuberance he displayed that had the advantage of gaining him an audience and people who were willing to be part of his ‘Kingdom’.
Ezekiel’s hard-hitting words would turn out to be just that… merely words.
He had no combat training or knowledge of military tactics which is why he had been content to provide for the Saviors for a long time until war became imminent. In the war itself, Ezekiel’s words surely rallied his people to fight but he himself had thrown the words out in the hope that they would be true. In Season 8, Ezekiel was over the moon when finding out that none of the ranks of the Kingdom had perished in the fight beforehand. Almost instantly, there would be an assault on the Kingdomers which led to everyone present, with the exception of Ezekiel and Morgan, to bite the dust. So much for optimism.
24 Step Aside, John Wick
The Walking Dead has never explained how easily the survivors tend to learn the way to work firearms. They’ve been shown to train with these weapons multiple times but there is no way anyone can simply put in a couple of hours into firing a few rounds and then become something of a John Wick. And yet, that is exactly how it plays out within the show. Interestingly enough, there have been a noticeable few characters who have not had function of all their limbs or were missing other vital body parts. In this instance, we’ll look into (pun partially intended) how the Governor and Carl Grimes operate firearms with no problems.
First off, there’s the Governor who was the main antagonist from Season 3 to Season 4. He displayed such an intense level of precision that even an army sniper would have to toss their rifle aside to applaud him. In Season 3, the Governor aimed a perfect shot straight at Axel’s head that took the poor guy out within a second. Then there’s this picture where he’s being an idiot by focusing through the scope with the eye that isn’t even there. Carl had been proficient in shooting before he lost his eye but after the experience, he never showed any problems when taking out enemies.
23 Take One For The Team
This one will make you chortle at least a little bit. There’s always more humor to be found when something pertains to an ugly truth. And no matter how much the writers, directors, or actors would insist, there’s an obvious fact that T-Dog was one of the top most useless characters ever on the show. He had started out seeming like an important member of the survivors. It was due to his argument with Merle Dixon that Daryl’s big brother ultimately ended up with the Governor. While that is one far-reaching consequence, T-Dog was not around to see Merle form part of the Governor’s group. It’s because he had long bitten the dust.
Right before his demise, people noticed he had started to get a few lines, something that wasn’t close to the case at the end of Season 2. In that season, all the guy did was walk around the farm with a befuddled expression on his face. In this regard, we should thank Dale for his sacrifice as his departure meant there was some screen time that could be given to T-Dog. Dale himself is an odd case in that his liking for Andrea was weird, to say the least. They didn’t seem to be all that close but the old guy was ready to lay down his life at the CDC because of her. Everything was in vain in the end, though.
22 Everybody Hates Abraham
Here the writers were hoping to take out two birds with one stone, or rather two main characters with one bat. In the long run, this decision has come to bite them in the rear pretty bad. At the time, however, one can imagine the writers being giddy with excitement like a couple of schoolgirls checking out the pretty boy of the class as Seasons 6’s finale closed out with the big cliffhanger over who got ‘Lucilled’. The showrunner promised there were clues in the scene with which fans could decipher who got the bat, but that wasn’t true.
The shock value behind this didn’t pay dividends.
Both Abraham and Glenn turned out to be the victims. The hope was that their demise would make the loss feel twice as worse but as it turns out not many people gave a thought to Abraham’s exit. While he was a popular character he was nowhere near as liked as Glenn. In the comics, Abraham had been arrowed in the eye earlier and only Glenn fell at the hands of Negan. So, big Abe had been living on borrowed time as of that point. The long wait for the cliffhanger to be resolved only for two people to be knocked off didn’t sit well with fans.
21 All That Filler
The nadir for The Walking Dead’s ratings began, ironically, with its second highest rated episode ever. Titled ‘The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,’ this episode stretched out the demise of Abraham and Glenn into an entire episode. It featured Negan breaking Rick’s spirit but all of it could have been done within around ten minutes or so. But the showrunners had probably overestimated the interest in the series as the entire Seventh season was filled with boring, slow-moving episodes that were too self-contained for anyone’s liking. It is very easy to confirm that nobody really wants an entire episode dedicated to Tara Chambler, much less the yawnfest that was the Oceanside community.
There was no resolution to the community war in the Seventh season either and this was extended to the Eighth season finale instead, which meant we had the Savior storyline for a full two years. It could have easily been done with in a single Season but when you’ve got three episodes in which all they literally do is talk to one another, then the show will see a long time to finish its storylines. The Eighth season was promised to be fast paced but that certainly wasn’t the case for its first half which was a slow-moving vehicle like the entirety of the Seventh season.
20 Only One Doctor Allowed
There is an abundance of useless characters on the show but there is a severe lack of doctors to be found. There must be thousands upon thousands of doctors in America but it would appear that when the zombie apocalypse started most of the causalities had been those who belonged to the medical profession. Every group the heroes come across – and there have been a whole lot of groups they’ve interacted with – they don’t seem to have any doctors. The most they ever find is one doctor per group. This would be believable had the groups been small in size but when you’ve got a faction like the Saviors, who seem to be numbered in the multiple thousands, who have just the one doctor, then things start making less sense.
In Season 2 the closest person they had to a doctor was the veterinarian, Hershel. In Season 6 they had Denise who hadn’t fully completed her studies when being forced to act as the group’s go to Doctor. Funnily enough, the only way a new doctor comes in is if the old one is knocked off. Once Denise was gone we got Siddiq, and once Dr. Carson was thrown in the furnace at the Sanctuary his brother, also Dr. Carson, took his place.
19 So Much For That Idea
Nothing is absolute in The Walking Dead world. In the comics, Carl Grimes is still alive – and turned into an annoying and unlikable character – while in the TV series he was disposed of in the Season 8 second-half opener. Unlike the comics, the real world cannot be controlled by the writers and actors sometimes have had enough of the zombie apocalypse lifestyle and want out of the show. Other times the writers might get desperate for some notice from viewers and write off important characters to lure back the fans to the show. Carl’s exit played out very much like that as the show’s Eighth season had seen record dives in ratings until his demise was imminent.
There was a little jump in the ratings once there was confirmation that Carl would guaranteed see his end. This, though, had the effect of ruining a previous important scene between Carl and his mother. In Season 3, when Lori Grimes was about to pass away (a big relief to many who had grown to hate her by this point) she promised Carl that the boy would see through the apocalypse live a full life in the new world. Cut to his final scene where he almost passes away painfully in a sewer before he ended himself in an abandoned house. In-universe it has been only a year since Lori passed away which means she was straight up wrong.
18 The Not So Useful Tiger
True to the comics, King Ezekiel had in his possession an actual tiger. The animal helped Ezekiel claim the throne and enabled him to create the visage of a King as a guy with a tiger tamed so well would seem intimidating to most. In Season 7, the tiger named Shiva was mostly seen lounging around the Kingdom with not much to do. Considering there were such large gaps in episodes that focused on certain people, it meant that Shiva was seen in only a handful of episodes. In the finale, she did something of note by rescuing Carl before Negan could introduce him to Lucille. Shiva was devoured by Walkers in the Eighth season, leading to Ezekiel falling into a deep depression.
The tiger’s passing meant the animal wasn’t utilized to its potential.
In-universe this is a tiger among people who can’t imagine being mauled by a creature like that. As to why Ezekiel never used Shiva to intimidate and threaten the saviors is a headscratcher. They could have used the tiger to attack the Saviors and take them by surprise. In the war itself Shiva was barely used and when she was made use of she ended up becoming Zombie chow. If you’re wondering what Rick in a tiger costume has to do with any of this then your guess is as good as ours.
17 Always The Same Face
When this meme was made the show must have been early in its Sixth season. Up until that point we had barely seen Michonne react with anything other than apathy. She was introduced in Season 3, after the reveal that it was she who had rescued Andrea from the farm and spent a majority of the next three seasons giving hardly any reaction to the circumstances around her. A flashback in her earlier days had shown us that she had resorted to this demeanor due to the passing of her boyfriend whom she was forced to take out. Still, it was annoying to see her remain stoic at all times.
During Season 3 she had been in unenviable positions where the Governor would repeatedly try to end her life, only for Michonne to carry the same expression in all her interactions. At Terminus, Michonne saw people getting eaten by other people but, yet again, she didn’t give us much to gauge her emotions. She certainly did display some disgust but nothing compared to her companions. Starting from the sixth season, once she ended up as Rick’s love interest, she has displayed all of the above-mentioned emotions without her signature one-note look.
16 No Sense This Makes
It’s funny to realize that The Walking Dead has had a nonsensical moment right from the premiere episode. While 2010 might not feel like long ago to some people, it would when one considers that The Walking Dead had debuted in that year. The above, ominously written words, had been shown in the majority of the trailers before the show had premiered. It will be a blast from the past recall of how genuinely terrifying the show had seemed when it first started out. Nowadays there is no way anyone would feel scared when thinking of a walker as these zombies are the dumbest pieces of creation.
In the beginning, though, they were a thing of mystery which led to us perceiving them as the main threat. In the first episode, Rick awakens from his coma and roams the hospital to find it abandoned and the environment indicating something disastrous having occurred. Written on the doors that led to the outside of the hospital were the words above. It is understandable why the person who wrote them did so in that way, most probably because they spray painted one door at a time. But for anyone who reads the normal way, they would be bound to read it out of order. It would’ve made more sense to write the words in order on both doors rather than exclusively on one.
15 Worst Best Friend
If there was ever an embodiment in fiction of a character known as ‘Mr. Steal Your Girl,’ it would be Shane. His and Rick’s friendship is something known as an informed attribute. We never saw anything between these two that would indicate they were the best of friends. Admittedly, Shane was shown to save Rick’s life when the latter was in a coma at the hospital, but after that Shane never gave any care for Rick. Right from the moment Rick walked into the survivor’s camp, Shane had it in for him. Who wouldn’t, though, when said person has been busy making moves at his supposed best friend’s wife!?
This meme makes him seem more malevolent than he actually was as Shane didn’t actively seek out Rick’s demise initially. He did leave him unattended at the hospital but he hadn’t had much choice at the time. Then again, why he never came back to check if Rick’s body was still there or confirm if Rick was still alive is a mystery. By the time Rick had reconvened with Shane and the others the latter had caught Lori’s heart and saw Carl as his own son. During the final confrontation between the two, Rick outright makes reference to this. No exactly Best friend of the year candidate, is he?
14 No Hair Detected
This might be an unpopular opinion but I think Glenn in his boyish phase was a more likable character. Part of the reason why the fans loved Glenn was because of the development he went through. In Season 1 and Season 2 he was the jumpy, goofy kid whose antics brought chuckles to most. Starting from Season 3, when he ditched his baseball cap, he became more serious and rarely ever made a silly remark. But it was his youngish ways that had made him endearing, to begin with. It was a pity we never saw that side of him again. One of the things that made sense about him being a young guy was his clean-shaven face, which went into a permanent state of transition due to his facial hair never quite growing out.
Seriously, right up until his last appearance in the Season 7 opener, ‘The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,’ Glenn only almost had a beard. It became a little annoying to look at and it was a minor hope he would just shave it off fully. In-universe it seems even sillier due to the show running around almost two years until his demise. In that time he never shaved and yet he always ‘almost’ had facial hair.
13 All That Whining
The Walking Dead is nowhere near as frustrating to watch as it is listening to the fans whine and complain. For the most part, these people are extremely antagonistic toward anything the show presents to them. To attest to this claim all you have to do is go on The Walking Dead’s Facebook page and check out the comments on any post. You’ll find these people complaining incessantly about how the show is terrible.
Most people have found a sweet spot for Season 3 and Season 4 and keep clamoring for those days to return.
It makes no sense when someone complains that the show has become boring and that they stopped watching back in Season 4. How on Earth would one know if the show is boring or not if they haven’t watched the latest episodes? A lot of the whining stems from important characters getting written off. The biggest complaints came from Glenn’s demise in Season 7, but people overlook the fact that the comics also had Glenn getting beaten by Negan so the source material demanded he be offed in the show as well. Then the people claim they are true fans when they supposedly are so fragile that just a single character demise will lead to them quitting the show altogether.
12 Nobody Misses Their Shots
Building upon the point raised earlier, let’s discuss how everyone on The Walking Dead has been blessed with extreme precision. We mentioned Carl and the Governor having accuracy despite not having an eye, but they aren’t the only ones to do miracle acts as everyone else does it on a regular basis. Take our protagonist Rick, for example. His go-to stance has always been to lean back and then take a shot. This has proven bountiful for him in battle situations as he hardly ever misses, despite the fact that for good target-hitting one should have all the focus needed rather than casually leaning behind.
But Rick could be forgiven as he was a former cop. What is more difficult to believe is how people who had normal everyday jobs have learned to handle firearms like professionals. Negan displayed some nice shooting skills in the few times he handled a rifle. However, the guy rarely ever uses these kinds of weaponry and was supposedly either a Used Car Salesman or a School Teacher before the apocalypse. Then how he can be such a good shot is a miracle. The show universe has blessed everyone with. By Season 4, any human could be expected to fire a weapon with pinpoint accuracy with no fear of recoil.
11 Coral!
The meme itself doesn’t give away the point but it is mentioned nonetheless. There are vast amounts of memes with this very scene playing out and all of them are hilarious to peruse through. In said scene, Rick is mourning the loss of his wife, and Carl’s mother, Lori Grimes. Andrew Lincoln always gives in a stupendous performance as Rick but on this occasion the delirious state of sorrow he was meant to convey just felt awkwardly funny. And thus, we have been presented with a multitude of memes thanks to this. What many will notice is how Rick here mentions Carl as ‘Coral’ instead. This is no spelling mistake.
Anyone who is a Walking Dead fan will know that Rick’s catchword is “Carl." The guy never goes any episode without uttering his son’s name. As a majority of the show has the heroes in dire straits, Rick can be heard roaring “Carl!” at the top of his lungs, concerned for his son’s safety. It was an endearing part of Rick’s personality at first but has been hammed down to little more than a joke. Now, whenever Rick so much as mentions Carl, even in passing, people are quick to note the recurrence of his favorite catchword.
10 A Dumpster Fire If There Was One
Seasons 3 and Seasons 4 introduced the filler episodes that the show has become synonymous with now. A couple episodes like the Morgan-centric ‘Clear’ or the double episode focused on the Governor come to mind. But these had been used to add more layers to these characters and didn’t feel too forced. In any case, these episodes were few and far between with the previous episode not having left a cliffhanger out there.
In Season 6, the first of the cliffhanger reliance of The Walking Dead presented itself.
In the episode titled ‘Thank You,’ we witnessed what seemed to be the end of longtime fan favorite, Glenn Rhee. What’s more is that Glenn appeared to have been devoured by a horde of walkers. This was a very gruesome and visceral end to a mainstay of the show and rightfully elicited a shocked response from everyone. But what did the show opt to do the next episode? They gave us an entirely self-contained episode focused on how Morgan mastered the art of Aikido and his friendship with Easton. This was the worst time to add an episode like this and people were not happy. The cliffhanger was stretched out till the last episode of the first half of the Sixth season and the lame excuse of Glenn hiding under a dumpster was not satisfactory.
9 Rick Is Always Up To The Same
Andrew Lincoln isn’t American, for those of you who weren’t aware of this fact, and so his accent is laid on pretty thick for The Walking Dead. The same goes for Lennie James, who portrays Morgan, as he and Lincoln are both from England. These two guys pull off a regional American accent very well but there are some words that give them away. Getting back to Lincoln, we established that his Catchword was ‘Carl’, but he also has a catchphrase to go along with it. Rick has been known to say “Stuff…and Things” on more than several occasions. Whenever he says those words you can tell he’s putting extra effort to make himself sound like someone from the states.
Within the confines of The Walking Dead universe, it’s a marvel how no one has taken the mickey out of Rick for saying “Stuff and Things” as an answer to every question. When he was grieving over Lori’s passing his only response to a concerned Hershel was that he was outside doing “stuff.” When someone asks him what he plans on doing in the long term you can be sure he’ll reply by saying he’s up to “things.”
8 When Dumbness Meets Spirit
They say you can never measure the size of a man’s heart, and it is this willingness to succeed that makes winners. Those are inspiring words but can only be interpreted as moronic when applied to a scenario where Glenn Rhee thinks he can take on Abraham. Glenn is an adept fighter against much stronger foes thanks to his harsh lifestyle during the apocalypse. Once Glenn was introduced to the Alexandria Safe-Zone, he showed he was a force to be reckoned with by defeating those who tried to attack or get the jump on him.
But no matter how agile or durable Glenn could become he can still never take on Abraham. The guy is a war veteran who is trained in military combat. Even if one had no clue about his army past they would just need one look at the hulking frame of Abraham to know there is no way they could beat him. On this occasion, however, Glenn had no care for logic and proceeded to punch Abraham so he could walk away. Of course, things didn’t look so peachy once the punch had landed as all it did was infuriate Abraham. This meme sums Glenn’s lunacy up pretty neatly.
7 Too Dumb To Live
Lori Grimes got on everyone’s nerves. The actress, Sarah Wayne Callies, isn’t to blame as she only did her job. There was no saving Lori from becoming one of the most hated characters on the show thanks to her strange decisions of first beginning a romantic relationship with Shane, then to dump him in anger despite Shane not knowing Rick had been alive the whole time, and then playing around with his emotions again by apologizing to him and leaving him confused if she implied there was a possibility they could be together had Rick not been in the picture.
When Lori crashed the car she was driving, few could say they felt sorry for her.
Truth is, a majority of the viewers were hoping she would perish in the crash. By this point there were hardly any redeeming qualities left to her. Lori wasn’t all that bad but there wasn’t much the writers could do to make us like her. Had she at least shown some use to the group she could have been seen as vital to the cause but the above car crash was absolutely moronic on her part. Let’s also point out how odd it is that no one seems to run out of fuel despite no one making fuel anymore.
6 All That Waiting For Nothing
The Walking Dead loves teasing the fans. So much so that the show is willing to make us wait years for a plot point to be resolved. As of now, the mystery of Heath is still up in the air. Heath went missing in the beginning of Season 7 but we have no clue where the guy went and here we are entering Season 9. Similarly, the case of Morgan took even longer to conclude and the wait was more frustrating due to the repeated cameos Morgan would make. He had made single appearances in Seasons 1 and 3, only to disappear both times.
In Season 5 we were made to believe he would play a vital role as he would pop up at the end of a number of episodes. When he did make a full appearance in the finale of Season 5, he was still not shown to be reunited with Rick up until the final moment. This meant that we would have to wait another 6 months just to see what would happen next. What’s terrible is that there was no point to this years’ worth of hype as Rick and Morgan barely had any interaction in Season 6. They had almost no scenes together in Season 7 and by the end of Season 8, Morgan was on his way out to Fear the Walking Dead.
