A terminal cancer patient will be playing Borderlands 3 before all of us get to as part of a very classy move by publishers 2K.
The third installment from the popular Gearbox franchise isn’t due for release until September 13 but Trevor Eastman should be lootin’ and shootin’ as early as the beginning of next month following some strong support from the gaming community.
The 27-year-old has been diagnosed with stage four esophageal stomach and liver cancer and was given a year to live. That’s quite unfortunate on multiple levels but, for a Borderlands fan, it’s extra painful as he’s unlikely to make it past the game’s release date, with his diagnosis having come last June.
Fortunately, a plea submitted via Reddit managed to catch the publishers’ attention through some serious upvoting by fans. And Trevor’s since posted an update in which he claims to be in contact with someone from 2K.
“Hey everyone, I just wanted to give you all that were kind enough to upvote and tweet about my situation an update,” he wrote on Sunday. “One of the people from 2k has been talking to me (not sure if I’m allowed to say who so I won’t mention a name) and he’s making it happen. They’re flying somebody out at the beginning of June most likely to give me a copy of the game. I just wanted to thank you all so much for helping make this dream come true. It means the world to me that you all cared enough to do that for me.”
Trevor had tried getting to see Avengers: Endgame early as well but things didn’t work out in his favor. We trust he’s seen it by now, though.
As for Borderlands, the game is still in pre-release state so it’s not clear just how much of it is playable. A gameplay reveal has disclosed that the main campaign takes around 30 hours to beat, but there’s so much more to do beyond that.
Trevor will probably have his hands full when he gets them on an early copy of the game next month. So enjoy, soldier.
