Hear that? That’s the sound of every PC gamer in the world simultaneously sucking their breath in through clenched teeth. In a move that pretty much everyone knew was coming after Infinity Ward still sold a bazillion copies of Modern Warfare 2 despite not having LAN play or dedicated servers, 2K Games has confirmed there will be no such support for their upcoming philososhooter (I just came up with that. Nice huh?) BioShock 2. And I don’t have to be Miss Cleo to predict the outrage to come from the PC gamer’s camp.
Oh, Gaming Industry, why hast thou forsaken me?
In the spirit of full disclosure, I admit I am almost exclusively a PC gamer. And call me old-fashioned, but this sort of behavior by a popular game company just makes me feel dirty. If you followed the explosive reaction to Infinity Ward when they announced this for Modern Warfare 2, then you will probably hear the same things directed at 2k. As much as I enjoyed the first BioShock, it’s tough for me to support a move like this.
Mark my words: More and more companies are going to follow suit, but as long as PC gamers still have Valve, BioWare, and Blizzard, we will be doing just fine.
What do you guys think? Is 2K following a dangerous precedent? Do you even care?
BioShock 2 will release for the Xbox360, PS3, and PC on February 9th.
