Triangle Strategy is a brand new tactical RPG that’s just been released for the Nintendo Switch, and it serves as an homage to old school tactical RPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre. While the UI and gameplay elements have been streamlined and modernized to make it more welcoming for newcomers, it can still be a pretty challenging experience overall. Here are a few Triangle Strategy beginner tips to help get you started on the right foot.

1. Explore the Area Thoroughly

The combat in Triangle Strategy is pretty challenging on its own, but to make matters worse, the game is also very stingy when it comes to rewarding the player with money. Without money, you won’t be able to upgrade your weapons or buy accessories or any of the resources needed for your aforementioned upgrades.

Thankfully, even if you’re low on funds, you can still explore the various levels to find items, accessories, and even money hidden away in the corners. Whenever you gain control of Serenoa in a story chapter outside of combat, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with every NPC in the area and even wander around a little bit.

Look out for shining spots that will sparkle every few seconds, and head over and interact with them by pressing the A button. You’ll be rewarded with some kind of useful item or material, which is great because that’s one less thing you have to spend your hard-earned money on. Make sure to scour every inch of the place before leaving because there’s no way to return once you’ve concluded your exploration.

2. Be Cautious With Your Weapon Upgrades

Weapon upgrades are the key to making your units tougher in Triangle Strategy, and they’re also very costly. Aside from costing a minimum of 500 coin for each upgrade, you’ll also need to supply the blacksmith with the required materials such as Stone, Timber, or Fiber.

As mentioned previously, these resources can be obtained through level exploration, and they can also be gotten as spoils in combat. However, it’s pretty likely that you’ll end up having to buy them from the merchant at the Encampment as well, especially since the number of required resources jumps up very significantly after your first upgrade.

Because of this, you’ll need to consider your options before going ahead with an upgrade. Your first upgrade for each unit will be pretty cheap, but you’ll have a variety of options available to you: damage output, physical defense, magical defense, HP increase, evasion, and more. Think about which stat upgrade would benefit that particular unit the most before going for it.

3. Do Your Mental Mock Battles

There isn’t any real way to grind out levels in Triangle Strategy, but you will be able to participate in optional battles in between chapters to help boost your levels a little. Whenever you enter a new chapter, head back to the Encampment and speak with the bartender Hossabara. She’ll provide you with one new mental mock battle to attempt in each chapter, and these will give out pretty hefty rewards including money and resources.

They’re generally pretty easy to get through as well, and also offer you a chance to level up some of your weaker units. Most importantly, the rewards you get from these will help with your weapon upgrades and give you more money to be spent on new accessories and recovery items.

4. Use Your Quietus Skills

This is something I definitely wish I’d remembered to use more often, but don’t neglect your Quietus skills. Quietus gets unlocked fairly early on in the game when you gain access to the Sundry Shop in the Encampment, and they’re basically one-use skills that can give you a big advantage in battle.

New Quietus skills can be purchased in the Sundry Shop in exchange for Kudos, and these include extra turns, mass healing, and guaranteed critical hits on your next turn. These skills can only be used once per battle, but they’re extremely powerful especially as you unlock more Quietus points, allowing you to use more skills in one go.

5. Promote Your Units ASAP

Finally, it can seem like a pretty big deal when you get your very first Medal of Bravery and you’re finally able to promote your first unit. It might be tempting to hold off on any promotions until you get more time with the game, but don’t delay for too long.

The good news is that Medals of Bravery are actually fairly easy to come by; they’re rewarded to you for completing story battles, and you can also buy them from the Sundry Shop for just 10 Kudos each whenever Archibald has them in stock. You probably won’t be able to promote every single unit in one playthrough, but you can definitely promote a good number of them.

Pick your favorite units and promote them as soon as you can, as this will increase their maximum amount of TP stocked, and also unlock even more skills for them to use in battle.
