Nintendo shipped approximately 53.6 million amiibo (figures and cards combined) in the 12 months ended March 31, 2016, president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed.
Kimishima told investors that Nintendo “shipped about 24.7 million amiibo figures and about 28.9 million amiibo cards, a huge increase over the prior fiscal year”.
The chart below highlights the huge increase in amiibo sales, though note amiibo cards were only launched in July 2015.
“By providing a continued presence for Nintendo characters in stores, we believe the amiibo platform has created great benefits for all of Nintendo’s platforms,” commented Kimishima.
He added: “Like software titles, some amiibo characters are also becoming evergreen, showing stable long-term sales with little seasonal fluctuation.”
The Splatoon series amiibo were used as an example, where in Japan almost 300,000 units were sold. Total amiibo shipments in the quarter are likely in the region of 1.5 million, with Nintendo previously stating it shipped over 52 million units as of December 31, 2015.
