The Nintendo Switch has been a huge hit for Nintendo and two games have dominated the headlines over the past few weeks - Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The latest entry in the Fire Emblem series is being lauded as one of the best games of the year, while the latest DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series has been controversial due to the random aspects of his playstyle.
There are many fans wondering if these two series will cross over once more, as there is a possibility that a representative from Fire Emblem: Three Houses will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC character.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses Is A Big Commercial & Critical Hit
Fire Emblem: Three Houses has been a huge hit for the Nintendo Switch. The game currently has a Metacritic rating of 88 and it has already become the second best-selling game in the series (behind Fire Emblem Awakening). Fire Emblem: Three Houses was the second best-selling game of July 2019 and it has had the best launch sales of any game in the series in the USA. There wasn’t much excitement in the build-up to the release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but the positive word of mouth has made it a popular topic of discussion online.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Fire Emblem: Three Houses will place on a lot of Game of the Year lists for 2019, which will be an amazing achievement for a series that has long struggled to find an audience outside of Japan.
The fact that Fire Emblem: Three Houses is such a popular game means that Nintendo might want to promote it further by adding a character from the game to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the future.
The Corrin Backlash
Corrin was the penultimate DLC character released for Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U and there was a backlash among the fans regarding their inclusion.
Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U already introduced two new Fire Emblem characters (Lucina and Robin) and both Ike and Marth returned from the previous games. Roy was also added as a DLC character after being absent from the series since Super Smash Bros. Melee. The fact that the Fire Emblem series had six representatives in the game rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way, especially with Corrin taking one of the coveted DLC slots when their game wasn’t even out in Europe or North America.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has added another Fire Emblem character in the form of Chrom, which means that the series is the third best-represented series in the game. If a representative from Fire Emblem: Three Houses was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, then there would certainly be a backlash from the community.
The Remaining DLC Characters Were Picked Long Ago
Masahiro Sakurai confirmed on Twitter that the characters for the Fighters Pass had already been selected as of November 2018. If a Fire Emblem: Three Houses rep was planned to be part of the Fighters Pass, then they would have taken Hero’s spot in order to promote the release of the game, with Hero pushed back closer to the release of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition.
The fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released so early in the lifespan of the Nintendo Switch means that there is a good chance that there will be more DLC characters released after the initial Fighters Pass, which means that a Fire Emblem: Three Houses rep has a better chance of being one of the characters released in 2020 or beyond.
The Likely Candidates
There are a lot of different characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but the most likely choices for a representative in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be either Byleth, Claude, Dimitri, or Edelgard.
Byleth
Byleth is the main character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and would seem like the obvious choice for a character pick, but Byleth is intended to be molded by the player’s preferences, so their combat abilities would be hard to define outside of using the Sword of the Creator like a whip.
Dimitri
Dimitri feels like the least-likely choice among the house leaders as he visually resembles the other Fire Emblem characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and he is yet another swordsman. There are several characters who use bows in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of their arsenal, but there are no dedicated archers, so Claude could fill that role. Sakurai claimed that Decidueye was almost chosen to be the new Pokémon representative in the game, so the idea of a full archer is something he considered at one point.
Edelgard
Edelgard is another strong possibility, as there are no ax wielders in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (outside of the special move used by Richter/Simon), so it would make her more unique than the other Fire Emblem characters in the game. Until recently, the “Most Deployed” screen in Fire Emblem: Three Houses shows that Edelgard is the most used character (that status now belongs to Dorothea), so her status as Best Girl is backed up with numbers and could lead to her being chosen for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
