THQ Nordic has indicated to Eurogamer that a remastered version of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning would first require a thumbs-up from Electronic Arts to get off the ground.
Why? Because EA still holds the publishing rights to the 2012 fantasy-RPG, despite the fact THQ Nordic acquired the IP last week. Even so, the company is still keeping quiet about what it actually intends to do with the Kingdoms of Amalur franchise going forward.
‘EA still has the publishing rights to Reckoning,’ said THQ Nordic. ‘About any other details about the relationship between EA and 38 Studios we can’t comment.’
‘At this stage we ‘only’ acquired the intellectual property. Given our track record, we know what the burning questions (remaster, remake, port to current-gen systems etc.) are, but we decided do not answer those specifically as we tend to put our heads together first and then do our homework, and only start to talk about anything once we feel confident and very familiar with the franchise,’ the publisher added.
Kingdoms of Amalur wasn’t exactly a massive hit on PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 six years ago, but definitely had its fans.
A remaster was probably one of the more obvious choices to spring to mind following the acquisition of the IP by THQ Nordic, although this latest development definitely muddies the waters.
