CD Projekt Red has announced that a new instalment of The Witcher is in active development.

Perhaps most intriguingly, the announcement of this new game declares it won’t be using CD Projekt’s own in-house engine. Rather, the Polish studio has now struck a deal with Epic Games to use Unreal Engine 5. The company calls the move the first step in a “multi-year strategic partnership” with the company for both licensing and technical development.

The studio says the partnership will allow them to closely collaborate with Epic Games developers on the project. They’ll be able to use any potential future versions of the Unreal Engine tech too. Together, they aim to “help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.”

As for the new game itself, the company isn’t revealing much more just yet. There’s no development timeframe, so those of you with long memories of Cyberpunk 2077‘s announcement (2012) to release (2020) timespan may already have stopped holding your breath for a release date. Still, we can remain optimistic. Speaking of Cyberpunk 2077, the studio also confirmed that that game’s forthcoming expansion will still use the old REDengine.

The team do tease that this new The Witcher entry will be the start of “a new saga for the franchise”. Does this mean a change from our regular hero Geralt of Rivira? Maybe we’ll be following Ciri as she becomes a fully-fledged Witcher? For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
