Have you ever wanted to own a Godzilla-themed console? Now’s your chance, because Microsoft is currently holding a sweepstakes where four random people can win a custom Xbox One X based on a character in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Over at Twitter and the Xbox Wire blog, Microsoft announced it has designed four custom versions of the Xbox One X, one for each of the Titans appearing in the movie.
Microsoft: “Each console highlights the distinct features of arguably some the most popular monsters in pop-culture history colliding on the big screen for the first time in the modern age: the bioluminescent beauty of Mothra, the volcanic rage of Rodan, the triple-headed King Ghidorah, and the King of Monsters himself, Godzilla.”
To summarize how the sweepstakes works, one has to be a follower of the Xbox Twitter account. You have to Retweet the above Tweet with the hashtag, “#GodzillaXboxSweepstakes.” Doing this will grant you one entry. (There is a limit of one entry per person.) The contest runs until June 7th. After that, Microsoft will contact the lucky winners via DM. It doesn’t sound like these consoles will be mass produced at any point in the future, making them true collector’s items.
Sadly, there is no new Godzilla game to accompany these consoles. Still, it is a great marketing move on the part of Microsoft and Legendary Studios. Merchandise for King of the Monsters has been hitting stores, and the film is right around the corner. The iconic monsters have been heavily hyped in trailers and TV spots. These custom consoles, based on the picture, appear to be high quality. Already there have been over 50,000 Retweets, showing that plenty are interested in owning a one-of-a-kind Godzilla console.
With Godzilla becoming a massive pop culture force again, it seems possible that a new game will come at some point. At the very least, a new title called “Godzilla Defense Force” will be hitting mobile devices this month. Although it has been a little while since Godzilla’s last video game, the iconic monster has had quite a few. Some of them were never released outside Japan, unfortunately. American fans do have fond memories playing Atari’s Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee on GameCube and Xbox. Atari would follow up with two more fighting titles: Save the Earth, and Unleashed. The most recent Godzilla game sought to replicate the feel of the Japanese movies, but was unfortunately negatively received.
The Xbox One X may be the most powerful home console ever created. Combine that with the unique Godzilla promotion, and you have a sweepstakes worth trying. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be stomping into theaters on May 31st.
