In Pokemon GO, Pikachu has played a central role in many events. Throughout the game’s history, there have been several different “Hat Pikachus” introduced. These are different models of Pikachu with hats or other outfits that match the event. They’ve ranged from Christmas-themed hats to full outfits for Halloween.
Many players are somewhat annoyed by these Hatchus, as they’re sometimes called, because Niantic, the game’s developer, keeps introducing them. Also, different Pokemon would, at times, be more fitting for the event instead of another Hatchu. With that said, some of them are kind of fun and very cute. Regardless, here are all of them so far – ranked.
23 New Year
To celebrate the new year of 2021, this Pikachu wearing a nice purple hat showed up to help bid farewell to 2020. The classic New Year hat is fun, but it’s just not that interested compared to some of the other entries on this list.
Slowpoke could be found wearing 2020 glasses, and Slowbro wore similar ones for 2021. These were a lot more fun than Pikachu’s purple hat.
22 Rayquaza Hat
The 2020 Throwback Challenge occurring during the month of May added four new Hatchus to the game. We have to say, this one is the scariest of them all. It’s not exactly a terrible design. It’s definitely more interesting than the flower crown and is more inspired than the Pokemon Day 2020 recolor.
Still, the contrast between the terrifying top half of Rayquaza’s face and the adorable little smile of Pikachu’s is a bit disorienting. This hat was available during the Hoenn Timed Research, which took place from in 2020 from May 15th to May 2nd.
21 Lucario Hat
In honor of Lucario being voted the Pokemon of the Year from Sinnoh, the Sinnoh Timed Research event brought this little guy to life. It’s thankfully nowhere near as disturbing as the Rayquaza version.
The contrast between the blue and yellow is pretty nice. This is one Pikachu that will definitely stand out sitting atop your local gym. Sadly it was only available from May 22nd to May 29th, 2020.
20 Charizard Hat
Charizard Hat Pikachu is one of those costumes we always wanted. At least, we thought we did. The plush Pikachus with their Charizard costumes are undeniably adorable. The in-game version is still interesting but loses the cuteness factor of the plushies.
Still, it’s a pretty decent-looking design. Plus who doesn’t appreciate the nostalgia factor? You could bring back the Pokemon Red & Blue memories with this little guy from May 1st through May 8th, 2020 with the Kanto Timed Research.
19 Umbreon Hat
There’s something about the Umbreon hat Pikachu that really stands out. It’s probably the least angry-looking of all the hats, which suits Pikachu’s personality better. The ears also happily stand upright. Maybe it also helps the colors somewhat reflect Pikachu’s natural coat with the black and the yellow.
Of the four designs, we personally like this one best, but it’s a close toss-up between Lucario, Charizard, and Umbreon. This Hatchu was available during the Johto Timed Research from May 8th to May 15th in 2020.
18 Safari Hat
This hat was released as part of the Safari Zone events Niantic hosted throughout 2020. To match the safari theme, Pikachu could be found wearing a safari hat, giving it a bit of an Indiana Jones vibe.
It’s a fun hat, but it’s pretty basic. It’s also one of the rarer ones, as you had to have attended one of the events where it spawned to obtain it.
17 Flower Crown
Pokemon Day is celebrated by fans on February 27 of each year, and it makes the release of Pokemon Red & Green in Japan in 1996. For Pokemon Day last year, Niantic introduced Pikachu and Eevee wearing flower crowns. Both of these starter Pokémon were adorned with a small row of flowers atop their heads.
The reason this Hatchu ranks so low on the list is that it’s pretty boring and unchanged. The flower crown itself is very small, looking more like a barrette or clip. A full crown around Pikachu’s head would have been much better.
16 Floral Hat
Niantic went floral (groundbreaking) for spring in 2020, releasing flower crowns for Buneary and Pichu. However, rather than giving Pikachu a flower crown again, it received a fun little floral hat.
It’s an improvement from the flower crown, to be sure. It’s interesting that they decided to make Pikachu’s ears poke through the hat instead of being pushed down by it like with most of the other hats.
15 Pokemon Day 2020
To celebrate Pokemon Day in 2020, Niantic introduced a new Hatchu (of course). This one, which was available for the duration of the event, is wearing a red cone-shaped party hat. The same hat was placed on the heads of the Kanto starters, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, as well as Gengar and Nidorino, who appeared in raids to celebrate the original opening sequence animation of Red and Green.
The party hat is cute, but it’s basically a rip-off of the already-existing purple party hat Hatchu that has been used several times before.
14 Fragment
In 2018, Pokemon GO teamed up with Japanese designer Hiroshi Fujiwara for a line titled the Thunderbolt Project. To celebrate, Pikachu was spotted wearing a black sports cap with two thunderbolts on it. This hat was called the Fragment Hat and is available in real life as part of the fashion line.
It’s a cute Hatchu, but it’s just somewhat mediocre compared to the fun of many others. Plus, the Ash Hat Pikachu is much cuter with a very similar hat.
13 Straw Hat
In 2016, the Kumamoto region of Japan was hit with a terribly destructive earthquake. From there, the One Piece Kumamoto Reconstruction Project began, inspired by One Piece series creator Eiichiro Oda, who is from Kumamoto and has contributed a ton of money to it.
To do their part to raise awareness and celebrate One Piece and its creator, Niantic introduced the Straw Hat Pikachu. This Hatchu sports the straw hat of One Piece series protagonist Monkey D. Luffy. This hat is nice and serves a great cause, but it just isn’t as cute as the Summer Pikachu, which has a similar hat.
12 Witch
Who doesn’t love Halloween? The very first event introduced in Pokemon GO was a Halloween event in 2016. The following year, for Halloween, Pikachu was sporting a spooky purple witch hat. This was one of the original Hatchus introduced and has been featured a few times since.
It’s a cute, Halloween-themed look, but it’s not as fun as a full Halloween costume, which Pikachu gained in 2019. It does get bonus points for pushing down Pikachu’s ears, though, which is a super-cute look almost all of the time.
11 Detective
Adjoining the release of the major motion picture, Detective Pikachu, the detective’s hat for which the titular character is known was placed on the heads of the Pikachu found in Pokemon GO. It sat nestled cutely between their ears, reminiscent of the movie version of Detective Pikachu.
This Hatchu would also “photobomb” the snapshots that trainers would take before spawning on the map. It was a fun addition that has been used many times since.
10 World Hat
Hatchus were actually introduced into the main series games before Pokemon GO, with a handful of different hats that Ash has worn in the anime. A couple of them have made their way to Pokemon GO, including this one, which is wearing the hat that Ash wears during the Pokemon Journeys series.
It’s very cute, especially with the ears poking down and the fact that the hat is a bit too big so it cocks to the side. However, it can’t compare to Ash’s original hat, which is found further on in this list.
9 Winter
Far before its actual release, this Hatchu was found in the game’s files by those who like to dig around in those places. These assets were also found alongside Stantler wearing reindeer bells. These were presumably meant to be for some sort of Holiday event. That was in January of 2019.
Toward the end of the year, this Hatchu was finally released. It’s a cozy winter look to be sporting a knit toque.
8 Santa Hat
Before the holiday Pikachu with a toque/beanie, there was a more Christmasy Pikachu available. Introduced in the holiday season of 2016, this was the first Hatchu added to the game.
Those who really love this Pikachu can rejoice, as it’s widely-available as real-life merchandise from the Pokémon Company and elsewhere. Plushies, stickers — you name it. There is a huge number of Pikachu merchandise with Santa hats all over the place. It’s pretty cute, after all.
7 Halloween Costume
Ending the yearly reign of Witch Hat Pikachu was this Halloween Hatchu introduced in 2019. This Pikachu is sporting a Mimikyu costume for Halloween, which is kind of dark when you think about it. Mimikyu itself is a horrifying ghost that disguises itself as Pikachu so people will love it. Pikachu is kind of appropriating that struggle for a costume.
This Halloween event also introduced Bulbasaur dressed up as Shedinja, Squirtle with a Yamask hat, and Charmander dressed as Cubone.
6 Party Hat
Before there was Pokemon Day 2020 Pikachu with a red party hat, there was the original purple party hat Pikachu. This Hatchu was introduced to celebrate Pokemon Day 2017 and has been re-released a few times for various other events.
This party hat Pika earns bonus points for being the original Party Hatchu. It’s also simple but not boring, adding just the right amount of fun for a cosmetic change.
5 Explorer Outfit
To promote the Secrets of the Jungle movie in December 2020, Niantic released this Explorer Pikachu, complete with adventurer hat and Wailmer canteen. It’s based off Ash’s Pikachu’s outfit in the movie.
This little guy is too cute. The hat is adorable, as always, with the pushed-down ears, but the little Wailmer canteen is just too much. This small Electric friend is going adventuring, and you can’t do anything about it. There are things to find!
4 Pikachu Libre
Pikachu Libre is finally available in Pokemon Go and we couldn’t be happier. This cutie isn’t just wearing a hat, but the complete wrestler outfit. Pikachu’s alternate form originally appeared in Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. Although the creative liberties taken while designing the Hatchus can occasionally create something great — bringing back the nostalgia of other games is quite effective with the fanbase.
She’s not exactly easy to obtain though. If you want her you’ll need to reach the top rank in the GO Battle League, which is no easy feat.
