Angry Birds, a puzzle game developed by the Finnish company Rovio, has found its way to the Android Market. Since being released on the iPhone and iPod Touch devices, the game has sold 6.5 million copies.
The Android version is currently available for free - with advertisements.
Games that have similarities with Angry Birds have tried but failed to capture a similar audience. Simple, straight forward design and addictive gameplay have been sighted as reasons behind its warm reception and positive reviews. Getting the game into the hands of as many mobile gamers as possible is a mission for developer Rovio. There are certain requirements that Android gamers will need to meet to take advantage of the hit game:
Angry Birds will only work with second generation Android devices and upwards - running Android platform 1.6 or later. Your device needs to support OpenGL ES 2.0. QVGA display resolution is not supported currently, but Rovio will add support for QVGA devices soon.
The game will not only be on the Android Marketplace but will be headed to the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable this fall as a PlayStation Mini. The iPhone moneymaker is on its way to being available on various platforms, including the fastest growing mobile platform. A future update will allow users to opt-out of the ads through purchase. A full game for free is at least worth trying out.
If you’re unfamiliar with Angry Birds, players take control of a flock of birds that are attempting to retrieve eggs that have been stolen by a group of evil pigs. The pigs have taken refuge on, or within structures, made of various materials, including wood, glass and stone, and the object of the game is to eliminate all the pigs in the level. There are many different types of birds used in the game. As the player advances through the game, additional birds appear, each of which have special abilities that are activated by tapping the touchscreen while the bird is in flight.
Angry Birds is available now on Android, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
