Nintendo Power has let loose quite the bombshell in their latest issue. A remake of the only clay-related fighting game for the Nintendo 64, ClayFighter 63 1/3, is going to be released for DSiWare early next year. The title? ClayFighter: Call of Putty. Yikes.
The update will feature 16 fighters (4 more than the N64 “classic”), including Bad Mr. Frosty, Kung Pow, High Five, Bonker, Lady Liberty, Sumo Santa, Boogerman, and Earthworm Jim. The game will contain both standard punches and kicks as well as powerful meter-based supermoves and some killer ‘Claytalities’. There will be a single-player story mode and a practice mode to hone your clay-fighting skills, and then you can compete with others online to see just how well you can fight with a snowman who’s definitely got anger issues in exhibition matches and 2-player versus modes.
I must be entirely honest here. I probably spent about 100 hours on this game when it first came out for the Nintendo 64. ClayFighter has never been known for its realism or attention to detail, but 63 1/3 was a great fighting game for two kids who sucked at Mortal Kombat (my sister and I), and no one is ever going to tell me that Ickybod Clay isn’t a great name for a jack-o-lantern/ghost thing.
In all seriousness, there has not exactly been an overload of triple-A, or even single-A titles for DSiWare since the platform appeared around two years ago. I am fully in support of Nintendo reviving classic Nintendo 64 games, and while there are certainly games I would rather see remade for the DS (Mischief Makers!), I think ClayFighter could make an interesting addition to the downloadable line-up. Check Game Rant in a few months to see exactly what we think of the crumbly fighter upon its release.
Think you’ll give Call of Putty a chance when it releases? Sound off in the comments to let us know if you have love, hate, or (more likely) complete indifference to this announcement.
ClayFighter: Call of Putty will mold its way into your DSi in late 2010/early 2011.
