It seems like nowadays if you plan to be an exclusive Xbox developer then you have to, at some point, consider Kinect implementation. While some developers have been able to avoid it, as the tech continues to grow and improve those naysayers begin to see the benefits of motion control.
One such developer who may in the future be leaning towards Kinect is Cliff Bleszinski, the man behind the Gears of War franchise. At this year’s E3, Bleszinski revealed that, if the situation was right, he might consider working Kinect into a future Gears title.
Most impressive to Cliff at this year’s expo was the Ghost Recon demonstration that took place during the Microsoft press conference. Seeing the not necessarily essential ways in which Kinect can be used to give the game experience a little more depth inspired Bleszinski to consider Kinect — that is if the Gears of War saga continues.
It might not be the thing that most gamers are interested in hearing — especially considering Gears’ status as the most hardcore of Xbox exclusives — but Cliff vows that, if it does happen, it will be done right. Much like Peter Molyneux — who initially was an early adopter of Kinect but since took some time to really explore the tech — gamers can expect the team at Epic Games to play around before putting ink to paper.
Rumors of a Gears Kinect title have been circulating the Internet for a while now, but finally hearing Bleszinski acknowledge it makes the possibility all the more real. Gamers shouldn’t be surprised to hear that Kinect implementation in Gears of War could happen, but they have plenty of reasons to balk at the idea.
“If, in the event there were to be another Gears game, that’s something we might explore. But we want to do it right. If I had unlimited amounts of time and a team I could sit down and make a cool Kinect game, and I would love to, but it’s a matter of time and opportunity costs right now.”
Still, with a developer like Epic — one that has been solid for more than a decade — it’s hard not to look forward to their next project. We just hope that their choices for Kinect integration expand the experience not hinder it.
How would you like to see Kinect utilized in a series like Gears of War? Do you think Kinect is ready to move into hardcore franchises?
