It’s been quite sometime since we’ve heard or seen anything related to Mega Man Universe, and all of a sudden the reason why makes a lot of sense. Presuming you’ve read the title for this article, you already know where I’m going with this — Mega Man Universe has official been cancelled by Capcom. The game was originally scheduled to land later this year on both XBLA and PSN, but that no longer seems to be the case.
Mega Man Universe was originally a game that allowed players to create and customize their own levels and characters, and the created content could then be shared with others who play the game. Even other Capcom characters, such as Street Fighter’s Ryu and Ghost and Goblins’ Arthur, were going to be joining in on the madness, but that’s obviously no longer happening. The downloadable platformer was playable at TGS and New York Comic-Con just these past few months, but initial reactions to the hands-on time spent with Mega Man Universe generally weren’t too positive.
In Capcom’s announcement, they stated that “various circumstances” lead to Mega Man Universe’s cancellation. While that reason leaves the door open to an insane number of possibilities, it’s likely that one of the main reasons the game was canned was the departure of Mega Man creator Keji Inafune, which happened in October of last year. Capcom has yet to go into detail about the cancellation of Mega Man Universe, but hopefully some of the decisions that lead to offing the game’s development will be made clear soon.
It seems that 2011 just isn’t Mega Man’s year. Not only did the Blue Bomber not make the cut in Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s roster, but Mega Man Legends 3, his 3DS adventure, still hasn’t been greenlit by Capcom. Mega Man fans haven’t been having an easy time getting their fix recently, but hopefully things will start to look up soon.
Are you disappointed by the cancellation of Mega Man Universe? Where do you think the Blue Bomber will turn up next?
