If there is one thing that’s become known in the last decades of gaming, it’s that Mortal Kombat needs no introduction. While a large amount of early MK fans have since moved on to more ‘sophisticated’ titles like Marvel Vs. Capcom or Street Fighter, there is simply no way to put a price on nostalgia. Many fans may have moved on from the franchise while it struggled to find its way among current consoles, but NetherRealm Studios is hoping that will change with their upcoming series reboot.

While outsiders may falsely assume that the reason that so many adolescent gamers flocked to the franchise way back in the days of the Sega Genesis was the blood and guts, real fans know the truth. It wasn’t the blood and guts by themselves, but the way the series completely embraced insanity and over-the-top martial arts that made the game more than just a display of gore- it made it fun.

While the first looks we’ve had at the upcoming MK reboot clearly show that the violence and insane combat that the series hold so dear will be on full display, story is  also going to be playing a part. Fighters have to deliver some lines before and after a fight, so what better place for some character development?
