BAFTA has made public their list of nominees for the 2011 video games awards. Somewhat surprisingly, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Call of Duty: Black Ops have the same amount of nods, tying for most nominations with 7 in total each. Mass Effect 2 garnered a respectable 6 nominations and it will be interesting to see if it cleans up at these awards, considering that it has one of the highest metascores for a video game ever, on top of having claimed to have garnered over 100 “best of” awards already....
Despite a complete lack of the letters “V” or “G” in the acronym, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has been recognizing excellence in video games since 1998. Although BAFTA is much easier to say than BAFTVGA. Final Fantasy VIII is far from my favorite game in the series, but I also don’t hate it. In my Final Fantasy rankings piece I put it at number eleven. Yeah it didn’t even crack the top ten. That said an eleventh ranked Final Fantasy is still better than a lot of RPGs out there. It’s just that, to me, there are ten better ones. My real issue with the game comes from reusing story beats from the previous adventure aka Final Fantasy VII....

The Fun Pimps’ 7 Days to Die, an open-world survival game which blends FPS, survival horror, tower defence and RPG, will release for Xbox One and PS4 via digital stores on June 28, with a retail edition hitting a few days later on July 1, Telltale Publishing has announced. Activision Blizzard has relaxed its SMS verification rules, and now allows players to now link their Battle.net accounts with a prepaid (pay-as-you-go) mobile phone number. SMS Protect is a system first rolled out in Overwatch 2 that is designed to stop banned players from creating new accounts and continuing to play. It was later extended to Call of Duty. The system was controversial at launch as players with prepaid phone numbers were unable to enroll....

Telltale games will be removed from digital platforms after this weekend due to the studio’s closure. Yesterday, we reported that Tales from the Borderlands had been removed from Steam due to the expiration of the Borderlands license. After the studio’s closure back in September of last year, it placed a ticking time limit on all of Telltale’s titles as all of their games use licensed IPs which almost universally come with a time limit....
During its earnings call yesterday, Activision released a few interesting notes about its Call of Duty franchise. While some of the really big news – like title, plot, confirmed release date – might remain a mystery, Activision did announce that its next Call of Duty game will have an accompanying “Online Universe.” They also stated that they did not plan on monetizing the features players currently get for free in Call of Duty games....
