Activision Blizzard has announced that digital pre-orders of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will be able to play the game’s main campaign a full week early. Activision’s pretty confident this year’s Modern Warfare 2 will be a massive success, but just how big can the game be? According to Activision CEO Mike Griffith, all elements point to the biggest success in the Call of Duty series to date. “We fully expect Modern Warfare 2 to be one of, if not the largest, title in the industry this year,” said Griffith. The success of Activision Blizzard relies almost solely on Call of Duty following a tough fourth quarter and year-over-year dip in earnings. The company released its year-end earnings report Thursday afternoon, and there are far less than a handful of positive takeaways. As reported by Activision, fourth-quarter net revenues fell 17% to $1.99 billion and net income dropped a whopping 23% to land at $525 million for the quarter. What 2007’s surprise hit Crackdown did so well was empowerment. Rocket launchers, fast cars, the strength to lift a tank or leap over a building; the player became a toddler loose in a candy shop. Crackdown was fresh and exciting, contrasting dramatically with other sandbox style games such as Grand Theft Auto. Now Crackdown 2 has to live up to expectations that the original never had.
