IO Interactive are about to expand Agent 47’s dossier in a big way as it releases the new Hitman Freelancer mode for Hitman 3 – now known as Hitman World of Assassination – today.

If you’re wondering when you can get your hands dirty in the new mode – never fear, as the studio has now updated fans on when they can expect to be able to start their virtual Hitman career.

Here’s what you need to know about the Hitman Freelancer release time.

Hitman Freelancer release time

UPDATE: 17:20 The Switch maintenance has now completed, meaning Hitman Freelancer is now live on all platforms.

UPDATE: 16:40 – As of 16:36, maintenance has now completed on Epic, PC (Game Pass), and Steam – with the only platform left still in maintenance as Switch.

UPDATE: 15:55 – As of 15:55pm, the mode is now live on Xbox and PlayStation as per the official Hitman Twitter. On Epic and Steam on PC, and on Nintendo Switch, the downtime continues.

As per the Hitman official Twitter account, the January patch that will bring the new Freelancer mode should now be appearing to download on most systems – as it went live at 1pm CET or 12pm UK time.

However, the game is currently also in maintenance mode as IO apply the backend updates to the game’s servers. They mention that for players to be able to play Freelancer, the servers need to be out of maintenance mode.

For a current ETA then, you should be able to play Hitman Freelancer – according to Twitter – from around 5pm CET (4pm UK time) as that’s when the downtime should be over.

That being said, IO has warned there’s a possibility the maintenance window could be extended, if issues arise during the update. If that’s the case, they will update the official Twitter account.

We’ll also – of course – update this page should we hear more.

It’s also worth noting that players of Hitman 3/Hitman World of Assassination on Switch will not need to download any patch, as it’ll be automatically applied to the Cloud Version.

Hitman Freelancer is an entirely new way to play Hitman. It’s a rouge-like mode, where you’ll have to build up your arsenal of gear before a hit by taking on missions, earning money and being careful how you use your equipment.

You’ll also get to build up a base of operations – but be careful, because you can also lose equipment in the field. Think of it as a sort of Hitman Career mode, as opposed to the usual story.

In addition, today sees Hitman 2 and Hitman 1 delisted – as their content is being merged into Hitman 3 and that game becomes Hitman: World of Assassination from today.
